Acclaimed pianists Oxana Mikhailoff and Vassily Primakov will perform one piano four-hand works by Schubert\, Schumann\, Mendelssohn\, Bortkiewicz\, Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky. \nVassily Primakov was recently called “a pianist’s pianist. He is a giant of the keyboard.” (Deseret News\, Salt Lake City). Since the release of his recording of the Chopin Piano Concertos\, Vassily Primakov has been hailed as a pianist of world class importance. Gramophone wrote “Primakov’s empathy with Chopin’s spirit could hardly be more complete.” \nOxana Mikhailoff was hailed in a recent review by Jon Sobel as “a titan of the Romantic Piano Literature.” Of her playing\, Vladimir Feltsman said “…(Oxana Mikhailoff) is a mature and accomplished musician…Her playing has character\, imagination\, and is poetic. She has a strong personality and stage presence.” \nThe Sparkill Concert Series features sparkling and virtuosic classical piano performances in a unique gallery setting. Union Arts Center’s Quincy Hall showcases a 9′ Yamaha grand piano. \nHalo and Horns Kitchen will offer delicacies and a wine-beer bar after the concert\, with a special meet and greet with the musicians. \nFebruary 11: Pavel Nersessian \nReservations are required by January 5 for the post-concert reception. Advance concert tickets are available until 12pm the day of the performance. Concert-only tickets are available at the door for $30.

On his critically acclaimed CD\, “A Very Gypsy Christmas” Doug demonstrates his long standing love affair with the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. Doug has been presenting this annual holiday show to enthusiastic audiences since its 2011 release. \nFeaturing Howie Bujese\, Michael Goetz\, and Vinny Raniolo \n“It’s tough to keep the knees and feet from moving!  Wonderful!”  -Wall Street Journal \n  \nDoug Munro: Master musician and guitarist Doug Munro is an established veteran of the New York music scene. Since 1986 he has released 18 albums as a leader and has appeared on over 75 recordings as a sideman\, producer\, and arranger working with a diverse array of artists including Dr. John\, Michael Brecker\, and Dr. Lonnie Smith.  Doug has over 75 original published compositions and over 300 recorded arrangements performed by some of the finest players in the world. Doug’s latest release\, “Doug Munro and La Pompe Attack: The Harry Warren Songbook” is a Gypsy Swing infused tribute to Doug’s great uncle Harry Warren.  In the recording field Doug has received two Grammy nominations and two NAIRD awards. Amazon.com picked Boogaloo to Beck\, on which Doug performed\, arranged\, and co-produced\, as one of its Top Ten Jazz CD’s of 2003. Doug also did orchestration work on the Oscar winning documentary When We Were Kings. In 2011 “A Very Gypsy Christmas “ was picked as one of the top five holiday releases by the Wall Street Journal. As an educator Doug created and was Director of the Jazz Studies Program at The Conservatory of Music at Purchase College from 1993-2002. He continues to teach there as Director Emeritus. \n  \n  \nHowie Bujese: A native of Bergen County\, New Jersey\, Howie first became interested in the violin in the late ’60 when watching a PBS special he heard American Traditional fiddling for the first time. He began traveling to the fiddle conventions in Virginia and North Carolina to learn to play. Over the years Howie studied and learned the traditional fiddling styles of the Southern Appalachians\, Ireland\, and Scotland and his curiosity eventually led him to Gypsy Jazz. Having no formal training he learned by way of the aural tradition\, listening\, watching and playing. Howie performs internationally and has played with a broad range of artist from Jonathan Edwards to David Amram to Noel Redding to name a few. Along with Swing du Jour and Le Pompe Attack \, Howie and his wife Pam Bujese are members of  Cool Struttin’\, a quartet playing the Great American Songbook\, and also for over thirty years with the NYC area acoustic swing band Out to Lunch. \n  \n  \n  \nMichael Goetz: Michael has worked with saxophonist Ira Sullivan\, Steve Slagle\, trumpeter Pete Minger\, Ray Vega\, bassist Ron Carter\, singer Alice Day\, guitarist Vic Juris\, Joe Puma\, Dave Stzyker\, Joe Beck\, Doug Munro and composer and multi-instrumentalist David Amram\, as well as the Glenn Miller Big Band and Lou Anderson Big Band. He has played throughout the metropolitan area at clubs such as the Angry Squire\, the 55 Bar\, Michaels Pub\, Iridium Jazz Club\, and Smalls Jazz Club in Greenwich Village\, as well as recording for various jingles on T.V.\, films (Snake Eyes\, Twilight\, Femme Fatale) and radio features for Oldsmobile\, American Brands\, Glaxco and Faberge. Michael has also worked on Broadway in such shows as The Producers\, Young Frankenstein\, Les Miserables\, Miss Saigon\, Ragtime\, Beauty and the Beast and Radio City Music Hall. Michael has a B.M. degree in jazz and studio music from the University of Miami\, and a M.F.A. degree in jazz performance from SUNY Purchase. Currently Michael is performing with the Doug Munro group which he has been performing with for the last seven years. Most recently he has been performing around the tri-state area promoting Doug Munro’s latest CD “Big Bossa Nova 2.0.” \n  \n  \n  \nVinny Raniolo: Vinny is best known for his accompanying skills and is a very high demand rhythm guitarist. His dynamic playing has taken him to 14 countries on three continents (and still growing)\, and he has performed in some of the world’s most illustrious venues\, including the Sydney Opera House\, The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco\, Lincoln Center\, and the world’s oldest indoor concert hall\, Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza\, Italy.  Often featured on National Public Radio in duo with Frank Vignola\, Vinny has become a familiar\nfigure on Public Television\, featured previously on three popular shows\, including the heavily programmed Tommy Emmanuel and Friends. Frank and Vinny’s own PBS special\, Four Generations of Guitars premiered in the 2014-15 season as part of the forthcoming 13 episode series Music Gone Public.  Vinny also has worked with artists like Leon Redbone\, Vince Giordano\, Deana Martin and Olli Soikkeli as well as on screen appearances on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. \nAll seats are general admission and include one beverage (wine\, beer\, or two gourmet soft drinks). DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Sunday October 22\, 12-4pm | More Info \nThrough Saturday November 11\, 2017 \n\nAllah is the Light of the heavens and the earth.\nThe example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp\,\nThe lamp is within glass\, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star\,\nLit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree\,\nNeither of the east nor of the west\,\nWhose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire.\nLight upon light. \nQuran 24:36 \n  \nThis short passage from the Quran is a favorite for mystics of Islam\, the Sufis. Following the idea that the source of all being is actually His Divine Light\, the traditional Islamic arts try to capture reflections of this Light by use of proportion\, harmony and balance. Our artwork offers glimpses of written wisdom rendered in proportional lettering or calligraphy\, geometric harmony in the art of illumination and paper cutting\, balance in the expansive art of marbling and scenes which are neither of earth nor of the heavens in the art of miniatures. \nArtists included in the exhibition are: \nMujgan Baskoylu\, Elinor Aishah Holland\, Zinnur Doganata\, Rabia Karakoyun Gundogdu\, Behnaz Karjoo\, and Nurdan Yeneroglu \nThis exhibit will be on display from October 1 through November 11.

DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Sunday October 22\, 12-4pm | More Info \nThrough Sunday November 19\, 2017 \n\nGeometric Spirits features etchings and paintings by Johnny Adimando & Catherine V. Graham.  Both artists work across media between painting and printing to create a rich sense of space and complexity of pattern.  Exploration between surfaces and techniques create visual structures to explore different conceptual investigations. \nGraham employs geometry to push perceptions of the viewer’s understanding of natural and  social sciences. Adimando exploits intricate motifs\, symbols\, and patterning to expose the spirituality and socially rogue attributes of omnipresent forces. \nPatterns merge and emerge\, revealing much of the viewer as the work seeks to create or obfuscate itself. \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\nCatherine V Graham is an abstract painter and printmaker whose work investigates the formal aspects of color and form\, while creatively referencing the social and natural sciences.  Graham questions human fate’s relationship within the rational and irrational\, natural and constructed worlds. \nGraham is attentive to possible ways the viewer will perceive and experience the work (which is dependent both upon the lighting and physical position) and results in a perpetually shifting quality.  This constantly shifting state signifies the complexity of space and time as well as the breadth and limitations of human perception. \nThrough explorations of perception\, Graham strives to make complex patterns visible in order to explore overlapping meaning within the social and natural sciences. \n  \nJohnny Adimando grew up in a series of small but highly decorated and intricately organized spaces. Proper arrangement was paramount\, and even the slightest unsanctioned adjustments to this domestic-utopia lead to complete chaos. He quickly learned the camouflaging properties of beauty\, the navigation of claustrophobic interiors\, and the absolute virtues of order and cleanliness\, omnipresence and control. He believes that the world\, whether the creation of a god(s)\, or a network of nations tightly-monitored by ruling governments\, exists as a panopticon\, where rogue entities and ideologies burgeon in clandestine-processes of unlearning\, defiance\, and stealth. \nAdimando suggests the “otherworldly” by presenting an aggregate of information\, that in its micro and macrocosmic forms still manages to preserve a tether to the indecipherable. He is intrigued by the questions: Have I been misplaced\, or displaced…and\, what is it to be out-of-place? As such\, these graphic messages\, although filtered\, are inevitably transmitted in a seemingly tertiary “signiconic” or codex-like form; a visual-language that bridges the cosmic and terrestrial\, crystallizing all-while dissipating\, and which harmonizes as it obfuscates. \nHe explores formal dynamics related to the representation of divinity\, self-imprisonment\, and ritual (tied to both dogma and spirituality). He focuses primarily on systems/structures of authority\, ideas about armoring oneself against the world\, and accessioning primordial escapist urges. By designing\, manipulating\, and reassembling a wide variety of appropriated and original motifs and symbols\, he develops highly detailed sculptures\, drawings\, photographs\, and printed matter. The visual dynamic is one of complicated symmetries\, coordinated patterns\, and complex constructions that form a symbiosis with elaborate codifications\, spectral visions\, and occult symbology.

DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Sunday August 13\, 12pm-4pm | More Info \nThrough Sunday\, October 1 \n\nThis exhibition is a living retrospective of Rene Fressola\, a painter who is predominantly self-taught. Self-expression has been modeled through his influences of Hans Hoffman\, Willem DeKooning\, Arshile Gorky and Frank Lobdell.  Fressola has in turn honed his own style through continued experimentation and the building of layers of marks upon the surfaces of his pieces.  He says “I don’t ever truly feel the pieces are ever complete\, I always know I can go back & add more!” \n  \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\n“I see my work as a continuous mix of influences and styles which are simultaneously simplistic and complex in realization. The combination of these elements have been present in my work since its inception. I am influenced by the color in the work of Hans Hoffman\, the fluid passion of Willem DeKooning\, the precision of Arshile Gorky and the originality of Frank Lobdell. I am predominantly self-taught and continue to paint and define my own style through experimentation. Painting allows me to express the beauty and ugliness which exists within each of us. I enter the studio with a commitment to create new and unusual work inspired by my interactions. Generally I work spontaneously; I just start with a mark and continue to build on it\, like when a dancer makes up new moves\, I dance & move with the canvas and just let it lead me! Pieces can take any where from three hours to three weeks. Colors set the mood for the viewers\, some serene\, some dark & chaotic. I am fully influenced by the Abstract painters of the 40’s-50’s from New York and California. My mood and the music I listen to help set the tone for my sessions in the studio.” \nRene Fressola was born in 1965 in Brooklyn\, New York. He began studying printmaking\, photography and painting in 1979 during which time he won awards for his compositions. In 1990 he relocated to Florida where he enrolled in the International Academy of Merchandising and Design to study Interior Design with an emphasis in color theory\, space planning and rendering. Fressola creates small and large-scale abstract works of mixed media on canvas\, paper and wood. He is committed to creating only original work — no prints. Fressola has exhibited in over 100 solo and group exhibits and his work is held in private collections nationally and internationally. His work has been shown at galleries in Tampa\, Atlanta\, New York\,Chicago\, San Francisco and Los Angeles. He now lives in New Jersey w/wife Tina & their dog “Rifty” and works in Westchester\, NY\, doing lighting design & interiors.

DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Sunday July 30\, 12pm-4pm | More Info \nThrough Sunday\, September 17 \n\nJustin Smith’s works are metaphysical exploration. Utilizing the full spectrum of the human condition his use of colors\, figures\, and shapes express feelings that are in a state of raw translation. Applied to the canvas with improvisational flair like the Abstract Expressionists\, and be-bop jazz musicians the gestural renderings are then layered and edited. Hidden images are revealed and deeper meanings come bubbling to the surface. \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n \n\n“My work utilizes the art of sampling\, which is a foundational technique employed in the culture of hip-\nhop. In a purely musical context\, sampling is the process of digitally encoding music or sound and reusing it as part of a composition or recording. Growing up an enthusiast of hip-hop music in its earliest and purest forms\, that adventurous spirit of sampling was unconsciously carried over into the realms of my creative expression years later when I started painting. My work draws from dreams\, conversations\, architecture\, images\, landscape\, music\, history\, and pop culture references that inspire me and organically. I am able to infuse or sample my influences throughout my art. The end result is often fresh\, colorful\, and vibrant work that comes from the heart but is edited with a keen\, discerning eye as well. The unintentionally ambiguous nature of my work is abstract\, but is made with clear and focused direction and intent. The joy that I receive when viewers of my work interpret what they see filtered through their own experiences and perspectives is unparalleled\, and often provides insight into elements of the work that even I didn’t see or notice before. This not only provides inspiration but further motivates me to create from the heart\, while allowing the viewers to connect with the art however they see fit.” \n  \nJustin Smith is an actor\, writer\, musician\, and self taught artist. He was born and raised in Rockland County\, NY. He graduated from SUNY Rockland with an Associates’s degree in communications. Focusing mainly on his musical and creative writing abilities throughout his early adulthood\, Justin transitioned into acting in 2012. That year he made his theatrical debut at the Elmwood Playhouse in Nyack NY\, performing in the stage play “A Soldier’s Play” directed by legendary local director Joe Albert Lima. The following years after\, he worked under the tutelage of the great writer/director Samuel Harps\, landing various lead roles at the Shades Reperatory Theatre in Haverstraw\, NY. Driven by an intense desire to artistically redefine himself\, he took a sabbatical from acting and began painting in 2013\, quickly developing his craft to the point of his work being accepted in group art shows in Manhattan the following year. Since then\, his work has been shown in various group exhibits\, fashion shows\, theatrical productions\, and festivals throughout NYC and the tri-state area. His current solo exhibition for The Union Arts Center Metaphysical Translation is the accumulation of his best work produced in the last three years\, and is truly representative of his talent and uncompromising vision.

Dan is sharing photographs from the 1.5 million mile journey through the streets of his professional life\, capturing the faces and places of his travels one frame at a time. \nDan Fiore is a life-long frustrated artist that could never draw a straight line or color within the lines. At age 16\, Dan picked up his first camera (a Minolta) and has never put the camera down. Over the past 30 years as an Account Executive\, he has traveled over a million miles. With his camera\, Dan has been able to capture the faces and places of his travels and adventures. “As a Street Photographer\, you are able to use your camera to document the real DNA of where you are and you’re able to slow the world down for a short time and really experience it.” Dan lives with his family in New Jersey. He hopes to continue his travels and reach the 2 million mile plateau while documenting the world around him one frame at a time.\n\nThis exhibit is on display from June 10 – July 16. 10% of all proceeds from the show will be donated to Table to Table\, a non-profit organization that distributes excess food to the hungry.\n\n\nMeet the Artist during gallery hours on Sunday June 11

Born and raised in France\, she started her professional career as a dancer. She then studied drawing and sculpture at the Art Students League of New York and the New York Academy. She also trained as a woodcarver with Bill Sullivan in New York City\, the Atelier Goujon in Paris\, and as an intern at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. \nShe has been awarded a Merit Scholarship at The Art Students League of New York\, the Nessa Cohen grant for sculptors and print makers and the Milton and Sally Avery Arts Foundation Grant. She has been selected for a studio residency by the Royal Drawing School at Dumfries House and just completed her first outdoor sculpture for Cary Hill Sculpture Park through a fellowship at Salem Art Works.

Her work hangs in collections throughout the United States and Europe.  She earned a masters degree from New York Academy of Art and is working on a second degree in art history from Columbia University.  She has attended artist residencies in Puglia\, Italy\, Melbourne\, Leipzig\, and Johnston\, VT\, and will be teaching in Provence in August 2017.  In her work\, she incorporates nature\, water\, and animals into narratives about the vulnerable human experience and the never-ending mystery of existence. \n  \nMelanie Vote\, born in 1973\, originates from Iowa and is a painter and multimedia artist based in New York.  She received a BFA from Iowa State University\, and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 1998. She teaches painting at NJCU\, the New York Academy and has also taught at Pratt Institute and The New School. Additionally Vote has been a visiting artist at numerous schools including the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Her work has been exhibited nation-wide and internationally. In New York at Flowers Gallery\, The Lodge Gallery\, Sloan Fine Art and DFN Gallery where the she had her first solo exhibition in 2008.  Additionally her work has been shown at the Indiana Contemporary Art Center\, Jenkins-Johnson Gallery of CA\, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum\, The Hangaram Art Museum in Seoul\, South Korea\, and at ADAH\, Abu Dhabi while an artist in residence there. Most recent solo exhibitions have been at Galleria Farina in Miami and Hionas Gallery of New York. She was a recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2006 and has been awarded numerous artist residencies including Jentel in Banner\, Wyoming\, KHNC for the Arts in Nebraska and the Vermont Studio Center with a full fellowship from the Dodge Foundation in 2003.  In 2017 she will be an artist in residence in The Grand Canyon. \n  \nAnnie Wildey is a British painter and printmaker.  She moved to New York City in 1989 and worked at the British Consulate. Art remained a part of her life during those years\, but in 2006 she began a new chapter with art at the very center and enrolled in an MFA program at the The New York Academy of Art. This provided the instruction\, immersion and creative freedom to develop her skills and artistic voice and proved to be a fruitful time bringing with it several awards including a post-graduate fellowship\, Prince of Wales scholarships\, and travel awards to Normandy\, France and St Barts in the French West Indies. After the fellowship\, Annie left New York for the east end of Long Island and spent two wonderful years as Artist-in-Residence at the William Steeple Davis House. It was here that Annie met and became a studio assistant to Master Printmaker Dan Welden and continues to assist him at workshops in the northeast\, including Haystack School of Crafts in Maine\, Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center\, and Montserrat College of Fine Arts. In 2011 Annie left the Long Island and moved to Mystic CT\, where she maintains a studio at The Velvet Mill in Stonington CT.  Annie’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally\, venues include:  The National Museum of China\, The Mall Galleries\, London; The Heckscher Museum\, NY\, and The University of Connecticut. Her work is included in The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program and can also be found in the book: Drawing Space\, Form and Expression by Enstice\, Wayne and Melody Peters.

The heart is a form that repeatedly presents itself in my site-specific work. It is here that I experience a profound connection and sense of oneness with nature. Pulling these invasive grasses is a small act that I perform to restore balance to this environment. The forms that have emerged from the forest floor speak in a primal and universal language. They are symbols that resonate within the heart.” \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\nSusan Shanti Gibian has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions in California and New York. Her site-specific installations were exhibited in two solo shows: For the Earth\, at Teatown Lake Reservation\, Ossining\, NY and Ephemeral Wonders\, at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation\, Cross River\, NY. These works were created by removing invasive species of plants to form sculptures\, and incorporated natural objects from the forest floor. Photographs of these works were exhibited at the Teatown Lake Reservation Gallery\, the Marin Community Foundation in Novato\, CA\, and the Unframed Artist’s Gallery in New Paltz\, NY.New to this collection is a series of works that document the passage of time of the Ephemeral Wonders installations in the forest\, including images of the environment before the artist began her work\, as well as the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy. \nThe juried four-person exhibit\, Sticks\, Stones\, Fiber and Skin\, at Gallery Route One\, Point Reyes\, CA\, featured Gibian’s installations constructed from stones\, beach sand\, and other natural objects. Photographs of her site-specific and sculptural works were displayed at the juried group show Elements: Earth\, Water\, Fire\, Air\, Ether at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts\, Sebastopol\, CA. \nSharing her passion and enthusiasm for the creative process\, Susan has been teaching art for 20 years. She developed and facilitated the workshop: Earth Art: Co-Creating with Nature\, sponsored by Teatown Lake Reservation and the Westchester Community College. She currently teaches classes in painting and meditation at the Westchester Community College. \nSusan has given public lectures on the topics of environmental art and the creative process at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts\, the JFK University Arts and Consciousness Gallery\, Sky Lake Lodge Meditation Center\, Teatown Lake Reservation\, and Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. \nThe recipient of a Puffin Foundation Artist’s Grant and four Innovative Curriculum grants from the Greater Capital Region Teacher Center\, Gibian is also a member of the Women Environmental Artists Directory and the ArtsWestchester Artists Directory. \nSusan Shanti Gibian was born in Mount Kisco\, New York. She received a BS in Visual Arts from the State University of New Paltz\, as well as a New York State Teacher Certification in Art Education. This trio will be transforming Gallery One with whimsical and botanical inspired works which blend sculptures with fanciful function.   \nThrough May 27 \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\nBob Capazzo: I am a photographer\, owner of a photography business and senior photographer for Moffly Publications. Over the last thirty years\, this role has given me the privilege of shooting events\, celebrities\, musicians\, top chefs and many fascinating people. These images have been on over 100 magazine covers and featured in countless articles. My photography and the people meet in my travels\, inspire me to pursue other interests. I play guitar in my own rock\, pop & funk band\, not to mention I build most of the guitars I play. I study dance and have a black belt in the martial arts of Tae Kwon Do & Hapkido. I also enjoy golfing and skeet shooting. I volunteer for with many charity organizations as photographer or as a lending hand. Business wise\, I currently sit on the board of The First Bank of Greenwich. I have been married to my wife Georgine for 32 years and our daughter\, Ashton is a graduate of Skidmore College. \n  \nJane Cowles: I consider myself a self-taught artist\, even though I received a BA in fine art from Drew University. My desire to create began long before then with my need to reconstruct the images I imagined while reading fanciful stories as a child. The processes I use are methodical\, thoughtful and intentional. Like the plot of a novel unfolds\, each design evolves detail by detail. My idiosyncratic\, sometimes overly ordered style is influenced by growing up in a chaotic household and my training as a tax attorney. Organization is my way of making sense of it all. So most\, if not all of my work\, is done in series\, a set of squares and reflected on stark white backgrounds. \n  \nMahtab Pedrami: My interest in art and design began in the suburbs of Tehran\, Iran. I was 8 years old\, serving as a very enthusiastic assistant to my geologist father\, who was working with microscopic fossil specimens. He would extract iron-rich clay deposits\, soak them in water for days\, then pour the resulting mud onto a sieve and gently rub it until only the microscopic sediments remained. Regardless of the weather\, I would sit with him in the yard to “wash dirt.” It was an arduous and time-consuming task – I had to be careful not to damage the delicate fossils – and my family and friends often wondered why I was so interested in helping. While part of the allure was simply spending time with my father\, there was also a very real attraction to the feel of the clay in my hands\, between my fingers. I relocated to the United States in 2003 and settled in Baton Rouge\, Louisiana. I enrolled at Louisiana State University and was majoring in jewelry design when I had to take a ceramics class for the first time. The first day of class\, I opened my bag of terra-cotta clay and cut off a section with my wire cutter. I carefully removed that piece\, stared at it\, then started forming it. I immediately felt the same softness I’d felt in my dad’s fossil-rich clays. From that point on\, I was more and more drawn to ceramics. It was during this time that I began to understand the importance of my relationship with materials and their inherent properties\, and how to trust my intuition and allow myself to be guided. As a ceramicist\, I’ve made a lot of ceramic dish-ware\, much of which ended up in people’s china cabinets as precious objects rather than kitchen cabinets as everyday tools. This was interesting to me: the distinctions that arise between objects of beauty and objects of function. I did not think they had to be mutually exclusive\, and I began to consider ways in which I could design pieces that were both functional and pleasing to the hands and eyes.These reactions led me to pursue a graduate degree in industrial design at Pratt Institute. After matriculating in 2010\, I became increasingly interested in patterns and designing furniture and home goods. Since graduating\, I have worked with various brands such as Giorgio Armani\, Yves Saint Laurent\, and Anthropologie as well as working on personal projects. In 2016\, I founded Albesque\, a multi disciplinary company that focuses on creating unique and one of a kind objects and spaces.

Trained in the centuries-old traditional Indo-Persian painting technique\, working with imagery developed by men to tell the stories of antiquity\, I aim to challenge the inflexible rules of miniature painting and recontextualize the art form to accept and embrace a female perspective. \n“In my work\, I am both the artist and the performer. I photograph my body and use these images as references for my paintings. Through the stories I create I contemplate what it means to be a woman. These works addresses issues of personal freedom\, destruction\, sexuality and censorship by unveiling the beauty\, fragility and strength of the female form. \n“I use the female figure to unfold a narrative that transcends cultural and political boundaries. I tell my own story while heavily embellishing it with imagination and metaphor. And although the protagonist in the work is me\, she also carries a dual\, existential meaning. DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nThrough Friday January 6\, 2017 \n\n\n\n\nOpen Gallery With Grace Knowlton: 11/27 and 12/17 \nOpen Gallery With Haile Binns: 11/12\, 11/26 and 12/17 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\n\n\n\nHaile Binns is an American artist whose wooden canvases shows the beauty of nature through color\, texture and movement. The foundation of her work is the welding of natural and industrial materials. Through earth and rock texture\, contrasting color\, and sharp emotional marks her work discovers the variegation within nature\, and strives to express the possibility of balance in precisely those places we tend to fear and marginalize as a culture. What emerges onto her canvas is all soil and movement – textural stories of brutality\, decay\, ferocity\, and change. \n  \nAfter Grace Knowlton graduated from Smith College in 1954\, she moved to Washington and studied painting with Ken Noland. Unsatisfied with that surface\, she started pouring rubber into flower pots to make relief forms for the paintings; the forms gradually evolved into free-standing\, round clay sculptures. The closed form’s sealed–in space suggesting hidden-away mysteries fascinated her. Then it became the form itself. She began to place different sized spheres in groups which could be moved around\, changing the relationships. Her early clay spheres were acquired by Storm King Sculpture Park in 1965. When Storm King expressed an interest in work of a larger scale\, Ms. Knowlton shifted to concrete\, which enabled her to create larger and more durable pieces. \nIn 1970’s the Newark Museum bought out her first gallery show in New York City – seven large concrete spheres\, which they placed in their sculpture garden. She has shown in various galleries such as Hirschl and Adler\, The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Lesley Heller Workspace\, Bates College Museum\, Neuberger Museum and the Katonah Museum\, among others. \nIn the ‘70s Grace began photographing white interior corners and printing the images in platinum. She went on to photograph subjects as diverse as seeds\, bones\, chairs\, and sawhorses\, looking for the abstract values of line\, form\, composition and structure. \nHer work is in the collections of (among others): The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York\, NY; Brooklyn Museum of Art New York\, NY; The Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, TX; Corcoran Gallery of Art\, Washington\, DC; Newark Museum\, Newark\, NJ; Storm King Art Center\, Mountainville\, NY; Victoria and Albert Museum\, London\, England and the Yale University Museum of Art\, New Haven\, CT.

DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Sunday October 23\, 2016\, 12:00pm-4:00pm \nClosing Reception: December 3 \nThrough December 4 \n\nStatement from the artist: “I paint because I have to.   It has become my pathway to relating to the world around me and inside me. It enables me to share. \n‘Some years ago I was taught a design system\, originally from Europe\, that changed my life. This system helps one break down visual arts to more basic elemental designs\, then reassembling them according to the artists particular vision and abilities\, never forgetting the original underlying structure of the system. It was suggested that I use paint in the system\, as my medium\, which I was very reluctant to do: I had never used paints before. It immediately seemed natural. I found my artistic voice and have painted ever since. I cannot help but view things within my system\, as it has become integral to my aesthetics and me. It always comes back to design and color\, in a never-ending exploration and evolution. \n“I have most enjoyed doing larger scale murals for children’s hospitals in the past. I am currently finding ways to do more murals locally\, thru grants and other opportunities. It is a goal of mine.” \n  \nMr. Cohen will be present during the opening reception on October 23\, and open gallery hours on November 20 and December 3. \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\nFred Cohen studied architecture at the University of Miami before attending Pratt and the City College of New York.  He has been featured in group and solo shows for over thirty years\, and received the Prix de Paris Award in 1980.

DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Saturday\, September 3\, 2:00-5:00pm \nThrough Monday\, October 3 2016 \n\nOPENS SEPTEMBER 3 \n  \nFeaturing ten American and international artists \nThe Earth is in a way forever\, but forever impermanent.  Changing\, shifting\, growing\, exploding\, substantially different with each rotation. Green and lush\, blue and vibrant\, throughout each revolution. What is Earth\, Impermanence?\nThis exhibit grew from a few artists in curious a group into a full-on cohesive discourse. The ensuing dialog surrounding the tension perched between permanent and impermanent is poignant yet alluring. Through a feminine lens\, climate change\, co-habitation\, and perception are re-examined. The resulting exhibit challenges social\, behavioral\, and global norms in ways that are beauteous\, while begging deeper self-analysis from the audience. This invitational of American and international artists is a sensuous exploration through a myriad of materials\, medias\, and meditations\, lending voice to the subtle exuberance of Earth\, Impermanence. \nPlease also join us on September 18 for a very special lecture and panel discussion with Dr. Lucy Spelman\, founder of Creature Conserve.  Learn more here. \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\nRoya Amigh is an Iranian artist who earned a BFA and MFA in Tehran before completing a Master’s in Fine Arts degree in 2012 at Boston University. Roya’s work has exhibited throughout Colorado\, New York and Massachusetts. She has been attending in a different Artist-In-Residence such as The Millay Colony for the Arts\, Art Omi\, Vermont Studio Center. She was a recipient of Ruth Katzman Scholarship in 2014\, and Constantine Alajalov Scholarship in 2010-2012. \nZsuzsanna Ardó is human by inclination\, humorous by nature\, and an award-winning visual artist\, art director/curator and writer by profession.To investigate contemporary society and culture creatively and critically\, out of the box and at times out of the white box\, she founded Ateliér A\, and curates international arts projects as the Art Director of Creatives without Borders. She has worked in many artist residencies around the world\, from France\, Italy\, Macedonia\, Turkey\, UK to the Deutsche Börse at the Frankfurter Kunstverein\, the High Arctic\, and the Art Students League NY at Vyt. As a writer she has collaborated with composers and performers\, and her work has been published internationally. Her visual art and curatorial projects\, featuring strong\, relevant concepts and a wide variety of artists from six continents\, have been featured at galleries\, museums\, festivals\, from the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts and Google NY to the British and the European Parliament. Polar self Portraits\, Ardó’s personal as well as curatorial art project about the landscape of the face (self portrait) and the face of the Earth (landscape) is featured in venues literally across the planet\, including England\, France\, Morocco\, Arctica and Antarctica. Earth Impermanence at UACNY grew out of Ardó’s Polar self Portraits\, and her climate change/Hudson Valley curatorial concept proposed to and discussed with UACNY during her residency at Vyt. The next chapter of her climate change through art project\, PlanetBody\, shifts the focus from the face to the body. Carmichael Braun grew up in New Ulm\, MN. After an exchange year in Switzerland\, she earned her BA from Bethany Lutheran College and her MFA from the New York Academy of Art. She is currently the Director of Communications and Caretaker at The League Residency at Vyt\, the international artist residency of the Art Students League of New York. She has served on two NYC not-for- profits: as a board member for Spark and Echo Arts and also as the President of the Alumni Association of the New York Academy of Art. Her artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally and may be found in both private and public collections. With her husband Andrew Braun\, a woodworker and cabinetmaker\, Charis lives and works in the Hudson Valley\, New York. \nChloé Bulpin is an illustrator and artist born in Canberra\, Australia. She spent her childhood living and drawing in France\, England\, Scotland\, Georgia (US)\, and Massachusetts. She attributes her love of drawing to her French grandfather\, a painter himself\, who used to keep her busy with stacks of paper and pencils. During those visits to her grandfather’s\, she would draw tomatoes in the garden and became fascinated with botany. Her obsession with nature and line work continued as she studied illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design. During her time at RISD\, she aimed to combine her loves of art\, conservation and biology to create work which highlighted the beauty of nature\, encouraged conservation and showcased means to help. She graduated in 2015 and now lives and creates art in Brooklyn\, New York. \nAngela Gram received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA from the New York Academy of Art.  She has done mural work for the American Museum of Natural History and her paintings exist in many private collections.  Angela has been accepted as an artist in residence by the Terra Foundation for American Art in Giverny France and by the Eileen Kaminsky Family Foundation at Mana Contemporary in NJ.  Her work has been shown in New York\, New Jersey\, Connecticut\, Florida\, Rhode Island\, and internationally with Gallery Poulsen in Copenhagen\, Denmark.  She has also recently been published by Skira Rizzoli in “The Figure: Painting\, Drawing\, and Sculpture” a book showcasing figurative art by established and emerging artists.  Angela currently lives and works in New Jersey. \nHeraa Khan is a contemporary visual artist from Lahore\, Pakistan. After being awarded a scholarship at National College of Arts (NCA)\, Lahore\, she completed BFA in 2012. Heraa has specialized in the traditional techniques of Mughal and Persian miniature painting. Miniature painting requires immense technical skill\, attention to detail and discipline. She uses natural pigments\, handmade paintbrushes (Kalam) and paper (wasli). She has shown her work extensively in group and solo shows around the globe. She was awarded the Ruth Katzman scholarship at ASL Residency at Vyt. \nLisa Lebofsky is a painter living and working in New York City. She holds a BFA in metalsmithing from SUNY New Paltz\, and an MFA in painting from the New York Academy of Art. Her work is in private collections\, and has been exhibited in solo and group shows both nationally and internationally. She is the recipient of several awards and residencies including the Prince of Wales Scholarship travel grant to the Château de Balleroy\, France (2005)\, Terra Nova National Park artist in residence (2010)\, the BRIO (Bronx Recognizes Its Own) Grant from the Bronx Council of the Arts (2010\, 2014)\, New Bedford Whaling Museum artist in residence (2013)\, and Saltonstall Foundation artist in residence (2014). Ms. Lebofsky finds inspiration and collects source material by traveling extensively to immerse herself in different natural environments. She primarily paints onsite\, but also takes digital photos to cultivate a library of images for studio work. Recent travels include Antarctica\, Newfoundland andLabrador\, Greenland\, and the Maldives. \nElena McCabe works collaboratively with natural objects and metal. Using silversmithing techniques\, the metals and natural “gems” create adornment objects. Setting ephemeral items in a traditional context of cultural value\, these miniature monoliths give form to a desired but sensitive environment in a dialogue balancing sustaining life and living comfortably. She was born in Poughkeepsie\, New York\, completed Pratt @MWPI fine arts foundation\, attended Parsons New School University and studied Product Design for the Other 98%.  Ms. McCabe graduated from Pratt Institute in 2008 with a BFA in Sculpture and Jewelry. \nChar Norman is an accomplished fiber artist specializing in papermaking and fiber sculpture. She received a Master of Fine Art from Claremont Graduate University and a Bachelor of Art from Scripps College. She has lectured and exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. She has developed and conducted workshops for all ages\, worked as a consultant to area schools and community arts organizations and has held the position of Associate Provost and Dean of Faculty at Columbus College of Art & Design. \nNatalie Tyler is an internationally exhibiting artist\, whose work has shown in museums and galleries across the United States and Europe. Drawing inspiration from nature\, she casts its essence into the elements of metal and glass. She combines masterly cast bronze and glass sculpture to make truly inventive and original artwork.   She has been a US Embassy sponsored artist twice\, once in Dublin\, Ireland and again in Tallinn\, Estonia exhibiting at the Estonia Museum of Applied Art and Design. She has received numerous grants and awards from art institutions like Mass MOCA\, Art Students League of New York\, Vermont Studio Center\, and Cornell University. In addition to her artwork she has curated large-scale exhibitions.  Originally from California\, she moved to the Berkshire Mountains inspired by its’ natural beauty\, vibrant arts\, culture\, and friendly people.

DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nThrough September 1\, 2016 \n\nBarbara Sandson has been concentrating her efforts in capturing the color and texture of the small forgotten villages throughout Europe. She looks for and portrays the subtleties and fragile beauty she sees around her and captures the timeless quality of these areas. There are almost no people in these images\, but unlike traditional architectural photography in which people seem irrelevant\, one senses here that they hover near\, just outside the frame. \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n \nNew York City native Barbara Sandson now lives in Piermont-on-the-Hudson\, just south of Nyack\, New York. Recently she has purchased a house on Martha’s Vineyard and now divides her time between the two locations. \nHer interest in photography came at an early age when her father brought home a Brownie camera and an enlarger. Her training became more formalized over the years and she has studied extensively in the fields of photography and painting. After working for twenty-two years in black and white she became seriously involved with color. She now enjoys the freedom and control of doing her own darkroom work. A great deal of time\, care and precision go into printing each photograph. \nWhile Barbara has traveled extensively throughout Europe\, North Africa\, Asia\, and South America\, she developed an early passion for the French language and France itself. She was a French major in college and studied at the Université de Nancy\, France\, and the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Barbara has been drawn back dozens of times ever since for her photography (and of course the food and wine!) \nA great number of Barbara’s photographs are now on permanent display in many galleries in the metropolitan New York area and Martha’s Vineyard. In addition\, her work is in numerous private and corporate art collections\, and the image\, “Rainy Day Roses\,” had a home for several years at the White House.

DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Saturday July 23\, 2pm-5pm | More Info \nThrough August 28\, 2016 \n\nNew and selected works by Norman Galinsky \n“I see my artwork as an embodiment and transmitter of healing energy- healing in the broadest sense of the word: physically\, emotionally\, and spiritually.  The compositions are created through an intuitive\, meditative approach\, a practice of focused attention and intention.  By using a vocabulary of abstract geometric forms\, patterns\, and repetitive marks\, I create images that portray vibratory fields and networks that contain the energy and facilitate its emission.  I often use sacred geometric shapes and converging circular forms to construct a central focus\, a ‘stillpoint’ that represents the unity of consciousness\, a merging of subject and object.” \nSeen / Unseen presents works that were created recently as well as a number of pieces created forty years ago which have never been exhibited. \n  \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\nNorman Galinsky’s artwork has been inspired by his background in science and engineering and his ongoing studies of metaphysics and spiritual issues. \nHis art studies began with a focus on traditional renaissance oil and egg tempera painting techniques\, followed by classes with Henry Pearson at the New School and with Will Barnet and George Tooker at the Art Students League in NYC. In the late 1960’s\, he participated in the Experiments in Art and Technology program developed by Billy Kluver and Robert Rauschenburg. After a seven-year career in chemical engineering\, he left industry and turned fully to art\, earning an MFA degree from Columbia University in 1973. At Columbia he studied painting with Philip Guston\, Jack Tworkov\, and Stamos\, and printmaking with Bob Blackburn and Tony Harrison. \nIn addition\, his artwork has been shaped by his 30 year experience in the practice and teaching of Chinese healing exercises and martial arts\, including qigong\, Taiji Quan\, and other meditative and energetic healing disciplines. He has taught these forms in his studio as well as in area hospitals\, including: New York Presbyterian (under the direction of Dr. Mehmet Oz)\, Englewood Hospital\, Nyack Cancer Center\, and St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers\, NY. \nBy synthesizing and translating the seemingly disparate worlds of the quantum sciences and spirituality into compelling images\, Galinsky’s art depicts the evolving dynamic order underlying our world today and forecasts possibilities for the future.

DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Sunday June 12\, 2:00-5:00pm | More Info \nThrough July 15\, 2016 \n\n\n\n\n\nSoul Argonauts is a collection of figurative watercolors\, etchings\, paintings and writings spanning the past few years\, which explore physicality. Working between figurative and non-objective imagery\, Whittemore cultivates a spontaneous use of materials to convey cathartic meanings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n \n\n\n\n\nCate Whittemore is an artist and a long time yoga practicer. Her work investigates how the body manifests\, and how art evidences\, emotions\, and how both bodies and art can be read for meaning. \n\n\n\n\nShe is a recipient of numerous awards and artist residencies\, among them @ La Scuola Di Grafica in Venice\, Italy and The Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Arts in Red Wing\, MN. In 2011\, she had the honor of designing a poster for the World Peace Kalachakra of the Dalai Lama in Washington DC. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs a member of the International Alliance of Stage and Theater Employees\, she was a professional set painter\, creating scenery for movies\, television\, and theater hits\, including “Spiderman; Turn On the Dark”\, and “The Book of Mormon”. \n\n\n\n\nShe holds a a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Connecticut College\, a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts/ Drawing & Painting from the University of Minnesota\, and was a full-time apprentice at The Studio and Forum of Stage Design\, in NYC 1977-1979. \n\n\n\n\nShe divides her time between Red Wing\, MN and Skyros\, Greece\, where she teaches creative watercolor painting. DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nThrough April 30\, 2016 \n\nView Michael Garber‘s exhibit Drama of Light\, where the artist showcases local landscapes in his signature style. \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\nMichael Garber\, a landscape\, nature and portrait photographer\, is intrigued by the subjectivity of light and is drawn to objects as they are transformed in changing light. He employs light as a design element in shaping and capturing his images. Dramatic scenes attract his attention especially where color and texture add depth and intensity. He has a special affinity for clouds with their visual power.He has travelled extensively to photograph diverse landscapes in their unique light. \nMichael studied photography at the International Center for Photography in New York City with Bobbi Lane\, noted photography teacher and educator. As a guest teacher for Bobbi Lane’s portraiture classes\, he taught the process of how to create a photo essay. \nHe is completing a book\, Vince\, Portrait of an Aging American\, a five year visual story of his friend\, Vince\, who died in 2009. The book documents the diminishing world of an aging American and his struggle to maintain dignity and self worth. \nHe also is the photographer for the forthcoming Timber Press book tentatively titled The History of Landscape Design in 100 Great Gardens by Dr. Linda Chisholm due to be published in the spring of 2017.

DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nThrough Saturday\, April 16 \n\n“I am interested in painting as a visual language. As a former student of Vaclav Vytlacil at the Art Students League in NYC\, I was trained to use abstraction as a means of expression. Throughout my career I have been exploring ways of using color\, line\, form\, space\, and rhythm to express what it is to be alive. \n “My subject matter sometimes starts with plants and flowers. I am painting their movement and rhythm. That is what interests me most- the way they present themselves and their gallant enthusiasm for life. Different kinds of plants have different ways of moving. Some are voluptuous and unfold with care. Lilies on a single plant often reach out and caress each other as they bloom. Their leaves take up a circular movement and their berries form a musical counterpoint to the whole choreography. Quite amazing. By contrast\, a zigzag cactus grows in spurts and jumps\, and then reaches out in a big sweeping movement with its mature arms to find the sun. The cyclamen are extraordinary because their leaves undulate almost like waves\, while their flowers – some like pinwheels – some like birds\, fly in a group seeking their light. \n“As a painter\, with all of this going on in front of me\, I try to capture this sensation with line\, form and color. The challenge is to convert my means – charcoal\, paint\, and linen – into a visual language which will express my response to what I see. We are all dazzled by the beautiful colors in flowers\, and the way their colors sometimes float on top of each other. By using\, layered color and line\, and variations of value\, chroma and intervals\, I seek to convey rhythm and movement. \n“I often use a large scale even for plants that are in reality quite small. SUMMARY:Listening Fields: Paintings By Sharon Falk
DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nThrough December 13\, 2015 \n\nSharon Falk’s paintings are inspired by the fields and wetlands where she lives. Walking through them is a journey of expanded time surrounded by the images and sounds of the seasons evolving. I paint wild things: birds\, and botanical forms\, as though I can see time and energy moving through them\, lifting upward and vibrating outward. I seek to observe the patterns and rhythms that are created in nature\, and to portray the aura of a subject with a glow from an unknown source. I think of these wild things as mirrors of us\, spinning their world\, in the language of cornfields and birds; they sing the world into being around us. \nRead more \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\nSharon Falk is a New York based wartist hose expressive paintings evoke the gesture of a moment in time\, and the power of that moment to expand\, timeless in memory. Her images are those of the natural world: wild creatures and landforms painted with a sense of motion that radiates the space around them. Light glowing from within and around the forms erases boundaries\, creating an energy and aura that transcend time. \nFrom an early age\, she had a desire to experience the world from many different regions and cultures; and has traveled in Egypt\, Greece\, Peru\, Italy\, Mexico\, and the caves of the south of France filling sketchbooks with images inspired by the art of those civilizations. She is intrigued by the effects of time layering over the ancient frescoes\, with artifacts made and covered over and found again; and her work seeks to express the energy and power existing in all things. \nGrowing up in Arizona\, and living in New Orleans and Los Angeles for several years before moving to New York\, she was surrounded by a rich sense of light and color and the space of wide western lands. Falk also worked as a courtroom sketch artist for CBS News covering historic court proceedings for broadcast; and having to travel on short notice to be at a trial\, and drawing every day reinforced her instinct to capture a figure quickly while it was in motion. With her interest in history and its fragments of the past\, she seeks to portray the potential in each of us: the divine side of us running parallel with fleeting time. We are each on a journey of discovery\, ultimately alone\, that expands in our perceptions and shared knowledge. \nFalk has also taught painting and drawing at Pace University\, and Bergen Community College; and has been the recipient of artist residencies in Santa Fe\, New Mexico; Woodstock\, New York; and Gatlinburg Tennessee; and received the Paula Rhodes award from the School of Visual Arts. Her work is in numerous collections nationwide.

SUMMARY:Vitality Of Life: Sculptures And Drawings By Lori Shorin
DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nThrough November 28\, 2015 \n\nFrom the artist: My sculptures can more adequately describe to you how the human form and spirit inspires me\, more so than can my words. However\, the following is what I can tell you about what moves me to create: \nThe vitality of life expressed in the face and body gets my attention. The eyes are of particular inspiration to me\, for their capacity to convey deep\, inner\, human expressiveness – both emotional and spiritual. While the human condition is a catalyst for the conceptual aspect of my work the process of finding those qualities that are uniquely special to an individual and yet common to all people is very fulfilling. Many of my life questions are related to universal interconnectedness in the physical\, mental and metaphysical realms. These queries give rise to ideas for new work\, and when realized\, feel like answers. \nI have gathered and organized a lot of information about the human form in my mind\, which fuels my creative intuition. Through my observations in my daily practice\, love of science\, personal introspection and meditation\, the physical and spiritual realms merge together harmoniously. \nAll of nature inspires me\, but to me the human form and the spirit housed within it\, has my full interest; that’s the bottom line. \nAbout The Artist\n\nLori Shorin grew up embracing different cultures having grown up in New York\, Belgium and Florida. Her work has always been inspired by change for social good. Mobile and site-specific installation\, soft sculpture\, plexi-glass\, various painting and drawing mediums are some of the materials she has explored throughout her creative career. While most of these works were primarily stylized and conceptual in nature\, in 2005\, she was inspired to create realistic figurative sculptures to express new ideas. She studied the human form at the Florence Academy of Art. A portion of the proceeds from sales of her work goes to the Self Realization Fellowship to support their goals and ideals of unity of all religions and to teach individuals to know their highest Self through the science of meditation. In addition to her studio practice\, Lori teaches at The School of Visual Art in New York City and holds periodic workshops at the Art Students League and other venues. Lori is represented by Sirona Fine Art in Hallendale\, Florida and the Principle Gallery of Fine Art in Charleston South Carolina. Her works are in the permanent collection of the Mariposa Museum of International Culture (NH).

SUMMARY:Cuba Antes: Images Of Cuba On The Cusp Of Change By Julie Cahn
DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nThrough September 25\, 2015 \n\nIn late March of this year\, Julie Cahn had the lucky opportunity to join a group of American photographers on a government approved cultural exchange trip to Cuba. It was a propitious time to visit the country just on the cusp of big change. Yet to be impacted by American capitalism\, the native artists the group traveled with were no less excited about the possibilities to come and as a result gave the photographers greater access into neighborhoods\, homes and rural villages Americans have been prohibited from visiting since the 1960 embargo. It was a privileged last look at the country before/antes the lifting of sanctions and a chance to document one of the last places on earth that has been virtually free of American influence for the last fifty-five years. \nJoin us for a light reception at 3pm on September 10\, with ample time to take in the images and share Q&A with Ms. Cahn. The exhibit will close on September 25. \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\nJulie Cahn is a writer and photographer and a teacher of both. She has published three young adult novels and several photo essays\, and has traveled extensively in Latin Ameria.  She strives to capture in her photographs the authenticity in the people and places she visits.

DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nThrough June 13\, 2015 \n\nMoving through palettes of orange and gold\, Diane Churchill’s paintings celebrate the power\, passion\, and mystery of the sun’s radiance. \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n“I am an abstract painter.  I strive to achieve power in a simple\, or relatively simple image. \nMost of my work has its source in nature\, so for many years I painted abstracted landscapes where I was more interested in the forces present in nature\, such as fertility of the land\, the sun\, etc. than in painting a specific site. I also was captured by images of apes\, and worked on that solely for about 5 years. I moved into the figure and explored identity as a woman in that work. Color\, that mysterious and most powerful of elements\, has been my main concern throughout. Color has effects we barely understand. Color waves literally enter our bodies through our eyes and affect us emotionally and physically. \nCurrently I have moved into images that are ephemeral\, such as air and water. With air\, I am exploring thought and spirit as things appear and disappear. DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nThrough June 6\, 2015 \n\nThe Union Arts Center is pleased to present The Way of Color: Blue\, a photographic exhibition by Iris Brooks. Color touches most of us on a daily basis\, yet many of us don’t stop to think about its impact on our lives. Colors are universal symbols and also have particular significance and associations in different parts of the world. Is blue really divine as Van Gogh believed\, or is it connected to wisdom and infinity because of its association with the sea and sky? Iris Brooks will show her mostly monochromatic photographs along with her curatorial selection of blue artifacts from around the world in this new exhibition. \nJoin us on Saturday\, April 11 from 4 – 6 p.m. when we will feature an interactive gallery walk and talk. The exhibition\, with gallery hours on Saturday and Sunday from 1 – 4 p.m.\, will run through June 6\, when there will be a closing event from 3 – 6 p.m. \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n \nIris Brooks is a cultural writer and photographer who has traveled to\, written about\, and played music on all seven continents. Her experiential writing and images capture her adventures: serenading penguins with the pennywhistle in Antarctica\, attending a royal wedding in Bali\, paddling a canoe down the Zambezi River on a sound safari in Zimbabwe\, luxuriating at Ian Fleming’s villa Goldeneye in Jamaica\, and harvesting healing herbs in Tuscany\, Italy. \nHundreds of her arts and travel articles and photos have been published in a variety of magazines on topics such as Australian Spas (Travel & Leisure)\, Art in Asian Hotels (Robb Report)\,  World Expo in Japan (New York Post)\, Food Museums Around the World (Saveur)\, Gardens of Montreal (Odyssey)\, Architecture in Portugal (The Hook)\, and Zanzibar Spice Tours (Islands). \nShe has interviewed luminaries in many fields including Academy-award winning director Julie Taymor\, Grammy-award winner Wynton Marsalis\, musical icon Ravi Shankar\, and spiritual world leader\, the Dalai Lama. Brooks has been the editor-in-chief of EAR Magazine\, the public relations editor of the New York Philharmonic\, and the program editor of the Lincoln Center Festival. \nTogether with Jon H. Davis\, her stories currently appear in video as well as print. Brooks and Davis create captivating digital documentaries exploring culture and travel in well-known and remote locations ranging from colorful deserts to tropical rainforests\, and idyllic\, island landscapes around the globe.  Their documentary\, Languages Lost and Found(distributed by Filmakers Library/Alexander Street Press) was screened at the United Nations in New York and throughout North America.

SUMMARY:Inherent Volition\, Knowing In Action: Sculptures By James Garvey
DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nThrough January 8\, 2015 \n\nWhat is the inspiration for these early sculptures? As a freshman in Mechanical Engineering\, I was required to take a course in humanities. Each time we met\, we discussed a new page of Hamlet. The writing resonates in the realm of collective intelligence; it is like the Gettysburg Address\, or the Declaration of Independence\, “These truths are self evident…” Shakespeare inspired me to respect sentient intelligence that can be perceived by any person\, apart from academics or wealth. \nReading Shakespeare is like going on a campout; everyone at the campsite appreciates a campfire when the night comes. Using secular language there is a visceral affect that is able to awaken a presence of wonder. I felt that I was a kin; I knew where the work came from in Shakespeare’s writing. I went to many art exhibits; only one piece had such a connection. I became convinced that I can create objects that resonate as strong as the work of Shakespeare because it would come from the same place. \nWhat is constant? There is an attention fueled by interest that is accessing a large map of impressions stored in my mind. An anonymous wit is functioning as my inner browser; then\, there is a form idea that comes to mind. \nMost of these pieces are made  at the Rochester Folk Art Guild\, 1974 to 1985. I received attention from Mrs. Louise March; a teacher for a rigorous program of self development. I believe she was extraordinarily patient with me; she made it possible for me to have time and a place to develop a “way to work”. \nIn 1885\, Mrs. March suggested that I go to NYC; I began work at the Statue of Liberty. She took full credit for any contribution I may have made to keep the project on schedule during the replication of the armature bars. Liberty Star was conceived and built while I was working at the Statue; after work\, I was a participant at the Athena Foundation\, a studio opportunity conceived by Marc DiSuvero for emerging sculptors. \nLiberty Star was conceived and built while I was working at the Statue; after work\, I was a participant at the Athena Foundation\, a studio opportunity conceived by Marc DiSuvero for emerging sculptors. \nAttention Star was a breakthrough conceived twenty-two years after the start of the Star Series. I was sitting with Barbara and Tammy waiting for a Kirosawa Movie to begin at the Film Forum. \n  \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\nJames Garvey’s training includes Colorado State University and ten years as head of Blacksmithing at the Rochester Folk Art Guild. He has over 100\,000 hours as a professional artist blacksmith working in New York with an open-hearth forge.  He has designed and built public commissions in Manhattan including MTA Percent for Art works at two subway stations\, The School of Spirits Doors at the Dwight School in Manhattan\, The Lariat Rustic Rail in Central Park\, The Lariat Street Furniture for Coenties Slip Park in Lower Manhattan.  He has completed design/build contracts for corporate entities such as: Ogilvy Mather Advertising Corporation\, Martin-Marietta Honeywell Corporation\, and Firmdale Hotels from United Kingdom. Since 2003\, he continues as full time artist blacksmith and as a part time instructor of the Sculpture\, ‘forging class’ for the Art Students League of New York\, at the Vytlacil Campus.

DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Saturday December 17\, 12-4pm \nClosing Reception: Sunday February 12\, 12-4pm \nThrough Sunday February 12 \n\nAn exhibition of works by Ekaterina Smirnova will include a series of large scale watercolor paintings. Through her work\, Ekaterina explores the relationship of humanity with the universe\, investigating our place as human beings in an infinite space. You will find mysterious clusters of stars\, the evening lights of a megapolis and various enigmas of light in nature. Ekaterina’s work is often inspired by science. In 2016 she had a solo show at the European Space Agency (ESA)\, participated two science symposiums and gave talks at NASA and ESA. During this exhibition you will be able to not only see her latest science-inspired pieces\, but also experience augmented reality to explore the invisible. \n\n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\nEkaterina Smirnova is a New York based artist. She is highly inspired by science (astronomy\, physics and chemistry). Ekaterina’s recent project\, 67P\, has been noticed by the European Space Agency (ESA)\, where she presented her work in 2016. The artist collaborates with scientists from around the world\, interpreting their research into art. Ekaterina often travels\, in the past few years she went to art residencies in Japan\, Ireland\, Austria and throughout the USA. Ekaterina works in different media: large scale watercolor paintings\, ceramic sculptures\, music collaborations and interactive electronics. \nIn 2016 Ekaterina:\nparticipated science symposiums: 50th ESLAB & DPS/EPSC;\nhad solo shows at: ESTEC and 4Bid gallery\, Netherlands;\ngave public talks at: ESA and NASA;\nEkaterina’s work was presented at the World Science Festival in Brisbane\, Australia.
