SUMMARY:Abstractions: The Mixed Media Of Eileen Karakashian
DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Sunday November 28th\, 12:00PM-3:00PM | More Info \nThrough Monday\, January 31\, 2022 in Gallery Two \n\nEileen Karakashian \nEileen received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1994 from the\nSchool of Visual Arts in New York City\, majoring in Advertising Design.\nSince graduation she was an art director in advertising\, producing both\nnational TV and print campaigns. Her work has been featured in Adweek\nand Advertising Age magazine. She continued her fine art studies at the Art\nStudents League in NYC\, concentrating on painting\, design\, color\, composition\nand collage. \nToday\, Karakashian makes paintings and mixed media artworks. By\nemphasizing aesthetics\, Eileen tries to develop forms that do not follow logical\ncriteria\, but are based only on subjective associations and formal parallels\,\nwhich incite the viewer to make new personal associations. Her paintings are\nbased on formal associations which open a unique poetic vein. Multilayered\nimages arise in which the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality\nis questioned. By rejecting an objective truth and global cultural narratives\, she\ncreates with daily\, recognizable elements\, an unprecedented situation in which\nthe viewer is confronted with the conditioning of his own perception and has\nto reconsider his biased position. \nColor and texture are the foundations to my paintings. The mixed media and\nacrylic paintings I create all usually start with a color idea and then evolve into a\ncomposition in which color and texture are the primary subjects. By applying\nabstraction\, I create intense personal moments created by means of rules and\nomissions\, acceptance and refusal. The results are deconstructed to the extent\nthat meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. – E.K. \n \nFor inquiries\, contact Eileen at eileen@ekarakashian.com \nVisit Eileen’s Website: Ekarakashian.com \nInstagram Profile: E.Karakashian.Art

SUMMARY:Perspectives: The Photography Of Mitch Eiss
DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Sunday\, November 28th\, 12:00PM-3:00PM | More Info \nThrough Monday\, January 31\, 2022 \n\nThe question is not what you look at\, but what you see. – Henry David Thoreau\, 1851  \nThe Photography of Mitch Eiss \nI got my first film camera in the early 1960’s – a Kodak Brownie with a flash bulb – and that was the beginning of a life-long passion for capturing moments and people. As my interest in drawing and photography grew\, I entered college as an art major but turbulent times and my interest in social issues led me to a career in mental health. Then life and responsibility eventually turned me to a corporate career. My one constant throughout was my love for art and photography. \nI am now happily devoting my time to making and sharing photographs. (Oh\, how proud my father would be.) I have shot major events and small music club venues\, but primarily\, ‘I walk the streets.’ Each of us can look at an object\, a person or scene\, and yet\, we all see\, feel and react differently. \nThis show\, “Perspectives” is representative of what and how I see – my mind’s eye – and perhaps tells you a little something about me and what I find naturally beautiful. \nI feel extremely fortunate to be able to share these images with you in this wonderful setting. – M.E \n \nwww.mitcheiss.photography \n\n \nwww.mitcheiss.photography \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nFor inquiries\, please contact mitch@mitcheiss.photography. \nVisit Mitch’s website: www.mitcheiss.photography \nInstagram Profile: https://www.instagram.com/mitcheiss/

SUMMARY:Contemporary Realism – Paintings By James Kimak
DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Sunday\, April 25\, 2021\, 12 PM – 3 PM | More Info \nThrough July 2021 \n\n“As a multidisciplinary artist working in both fine and graphic arts\, I have been fortunate to live a ‘creative life’ since graduating with a BS in Fine Art from the University of Bridgeport in 1976. While working in creative design and illustration positions including The New Haven Register\, DC and Marvel Comics\, NBC and CNBC\, I have kept up my work in painting and drawing\, having my first solo show\, “A Sense of Place\,” at the Edward Hopper House (now Museum) in Nyack\, NY in 1993. Following this successful show\, I became a founding member of the cooperative Piermont (NY) Flywheel Gallery where I exhibited for a number of years before eventual representation by the Allen Sheppard Gallery in Piermont and New York City’s Chelsea arts district. There were four successful solo exhibits with this gallery. \nSince then\, I have exhibited in many juried (including some jurists of note)\, group and solo shows in and around NYC\, including at the annual national juried show at the Rockport (MA) Art Association & Museum\, where I garnered a Gold Medal for Excellence in Painting.  Also among these shows was a regular showing of seven solo exhibitions at Chef Peter Kelley’s (Iron Chef winner) restaurant\, the Freelance Cafe in Piermont. I have also donated numerous works to various non-profit organizations’ fund raising efforts throughout the years\, and am a former Board member of the Edward Hopper House Museum. \n For the past 15 years\, another focus has been on large-scale graphic mural designs for many major institutions such as Columbia University\, New York Presbyterian Hospitals\, the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh\, Montefiore Medical Center\, and the Garden of Dreams Foundation of Madison Square Garden among others. These internationally award-winning graphic\, narrative works\, which often incorporate my fine art and photography\, can be seen at www.KimakDesign.com . \nBeginning in 2019\, I switched my long-time painting and drawing focus from works in pastel\, to larger pieces in acrylic on canvas. I focus on light and form\, using abstraction and realism in the Edward Hopper mold (among other influences – I am also a fan of Fairfield porter\, Richard Diebenkorn\, etc..) to express my feelings about the world around me\, focusing on beauty in the play of light on what is\, often times\, seemingly ordinary subject matter. Indeed\, a 2019 solo show at the ArtSuite Gallery in Piermont\, NY was entitled “Explorations in Light and Form.” I am scheduled for inclusion in a group show later this year at the Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson\, NY. My work can also be currently viewed at Ned Kelly and Company in Piermont and on my website at JamesKimakFineArt.com \nMy wish is that any “art statement” I can make lies more concretely in the works themselves. I hope you enjoy viewing them. Please contact me\, or the staff at Roost\, if you are interested in purchasing any of the pieces.”~James \nExhibit may be viewed while dining at Roost Restaurant. Open @5 PM daily (except Tuesdays) or by appointment: 845-359-0258. \nPhoto Credit: Paul Undersinger \nSELECTED EXHIBITIONS \nSolo Exhibitions: \n*  Roost@Union Arts Center (Gallery 1 )\, Sparkill\, NY.  April 7 through June\, 2021 \n*  ArtSuite NY Gallery\, Piermont\, NY  “Explorations in Light And Form\,” September 14 – November 2\, 2019. SUMMARY:Norman Galinsky: “Contemplating Presence”
DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nClosing Reception: March 21\, 2021 | More Info \nThrough Early April 2021 \n\nAbove image: “Spiral Cluster”  72”x 72”  2019 \nGallery Hours by Appointment. Call 845-359-0258 \nArt may also be viewed during Roost Restaurant’s hours of operation\, Wednesday through Monday (Closed Tuesday). Doors open @ 5 PM. \nNorman Galinsky captures the essence of energy in his art\, creating works that depict stillness in motion.  \nHis work represents the relationship between the energetic and quantum nature of reality and the spiritual essence embodied by art. He believes that art expression is energy itself\, an aspect of what the Chinese term Qi. Using a vocabulary of abstract geometric forms and free-hand applied marks\, patterns are developed that contain energy and facilitate its flow. These compositions are created through an intuitive\, meditative approach\, a practice of focused attention and intention. The images suggest emissions of waves and particles\, vibratory fields\, and networks. Often sacred geometric shapes and proportions and converging circular forms are used to generate a central focus—a “stillpoint”—that inspires contemplation.  \nThis exhibition is being presented in Gallery Two. \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\nAfter an early career in industry—in applied research in chemical engineering\, Norman Galinsky turned fully to art\, earning an MFA degree from Columbia University. At Columbia\, he studied painting with Philip Guston\, Jack Tworkov\, and Stamos\, and printmaking with Bob Blackburn and Tony Harrison. He also studied with George Tooker and Will Barnet at the Art Students League\, and with Henry Pearson at the New School. Artists Stephen Greene and Richard Pousette-Dart were friends and mentors. \nGalinsky’s art has also been inspired and informed by his background in science and engineering\, by his ongoing interest and study of meditative and energy-healing disciplines and consciousness\, as well as by his more than 35-year study\, practice\, and teaching of Chinese martial and healing arts\, including Taiji Quan and qigong. He sees his work as related to the emerging field of “NeuroArts\,” the science of how art measurably changes the brain and the body to promote health and well-being. \nNorman Galinsky had his first exhibit in New York City in 1977 at the Jock Truman Gallery (formerly The Betty Parsons Gallery) and has been exhibiting in solo and group exhibitions ever since. His art is represented in numerous private and corporate collections\, including IBM\, Exxon-Mobil\, The Four Seasons Hotels\, Bank of America\, Astra Merck\, Novartis\, and Pepsico\, among others. \nVisit Norman’s website:  www.normangalinsky.com

D.\, 1968 \nTom Artin is a photographer living in Rockland County\, New York. His subjects range from landscapes\, seascapes and cityscapes to portraits\, florals and still lifes.  Artin began taking\, developing\, and printing images in the early 1950s.  \nThe majority of Artin’s photographs originate as medium format images shot on film with vintage Rolleiflexes and a Hasselblad\, though he also works with 4”x5” and 8”x10” view cameras.  In recent years\, he has added digital cameras to his toolbox\, specifically several Sony cameras outfitted with Carl Zeiss lenses.  In the digital lightroom\, he processes images scanned from negatives and transparencies in Photoshop and prints on Hahnemühle water-color type papers via Conetech Piezography\, a Quad-tone digital black and white printing process developed for the Epson inkjet printers. \nIn the 1950’s Artin outfitted his own dedicated darkroom at home and devoted his high school senior chemistry project to the chemistry of photography\, which included fabricating and printing on his own photographic paper.  In 1956\, he worked as photographic assistant to William Vandivert\, staff photographer for Life and Time magazines\, and one of the founders of Magnum.  Tom’s photographic career ran in parallel with a career as medieval scholar and college teacher\, which he left in 1979 to pursue yet a third a career as a professional jazz musician.  \nIn recent decades\, Artin’s work has been primarily in the fine-art category\, though he has done fashion and other commercial photography for both print and the internet.  Artin’s studio\, in Sparkill\, NY\, serves also as his lightroom.  His images and fine art posters are sold world-wide. He is currently represented by Artography Limited: www.artographylimited.com and www.artographylimited.shop \nTom Artin can be reached at tom@artinarts.com. \nVist Tom’s Website at www.artinarts.com

SUMMARY:Sparkill Concert Series Presents: A Gift from Oxana and Vassily
DESCRIPTION:We are so fortunate to have these World-Renowned Pianists performing at Union Arts Center once again! Watch it any time\, as many times as you’d like\, from the comfort of home. \n\n\nOXANA MIKHAILOFF IN AN ALL-CHOPIN RECITAL\n“I remember hearing Oxana play Chopin on many occasions. For instance\, I have heard her 4th Ballade a number of times. Each time it had a new meaning\, a new “stage”. \nHer current selection of Chopin pieces is very personal – only those works that she is particularly close with and performed at different stages of her life. Now they once again come alive at this very special event. \nIt is indeed a journey through Chopin’s life. And it is also a journey through life itself.” \n–Vassily Primakov

SUMMARY:Drawing With Fire (Quincy Hall)
DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, August 1\, 5:00 – 7:00PM | More Info \nThrough Friday\, September 27\, 2019 \n\nThis series of drawings was begun during an Artist Fellowship at the Creative Glass Center of America\, Wheaton Arts Center in 2014. The most recent edition was created at Urban Glass in Brooklyn\, NY in 2019. \nIn this body of work I work directly on paper\, drawing with molten glass. As in all work with hot glass\, the artist must work quickly- almost as if it were a dance. The resulting imagery reflects this sense of immediacy\, creating gestural marks that reflect the quality of molten glass itself. \n \n \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\nJoan Harmon received her Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts from the California College of Art where she began working in hot glass and worked directly with William Morris and Dale Chihuly at Pilchuck Glass School\, Stanwood\, Washington in its early years. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Drawing and Sculpture from Rutgers University. Harmon has received numerous grants and fellowships including an Honorarium from Burning Man in 2017. She is a sculptor and multimedia artist who works in a variety of media including cast cement\, wood\, fired clay\, glass and wax and sometimes incorporating sound and light.

SUMMARY:The Laurence Hobgood Trio feat. The Solar String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:t e s s e t e r r a: CD Release Concert \nWith t e s s e t e r r a\, Laurence Hobgood combines his love of jazz trio and composing for string quartet with nuanced and exquisite arrangements of the “expanded songbook” – repertoire ranging from Cole Porter to Sting\, Hoagie Carmichael to Paul McCartney\, Chopin to Crosby Stills & Nash.  t e s s e t e r r a  embodies the signature style of composing and arranging Hobgood has become known for: imaginatively innovative yet melodically memorable. This concert features The Laurence Hobgood Trio: Laurence Hobgood\, piano\, Jared Schonig\, drums\, and Matthew Clohesy\, bass – with The Solar String Quartet- Leonor Falcon and Tomoko Omura\, violin; Jen Herman\, viola; and Brian Sanders\, cello. \nClick here for Video \nOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\nt e s s e t e r r a is Laurence’s new program of standards re-woven for jazz trio and string quartet. Titles are as diverse as Wichita Lineman\, Blackbird\, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic\, We Shall Overcome — even a Chopin Waltz (Opus 64 no. 2 in C#Minor)\, all vividly arranged in a style we’re calling “third stream nouveau” — the sound of the string quartet brings a definite classical element to this project\, but the central idea is for the trio to shine as a fully functioning jazz trio\, weaving improvisatory exploration within the fabric of thoroughly composed orchestrations. \nThe words “weaving” and “fabric” are quite intentional; the word t e s s e t e r r a  is Laurence’s invention\, and translates roughly as “the sonic fabric of the world.” It’s an amalgam of tessitura and terra. Terra is latin for ‘earth’; ‘tessitura’ means ‘texture’ in Italian but musically refers to the most favorable portion of a voice’s (or instrument’s) overall range. So perhaps an even more accurate definition would be “the world’s most pleasing musical textures.” \n \nLaurence Hobgood’s new album is grounded in a deep and rich musicality… like nothing I’ve heard in decades. It is at different times surprising\, thought-provoking\, nuanced\, and always exquisite. What do Debussy\, Ravel\, Miles Davis and Johnny Cash have in common? They were all superb crafters of melody\, harmony and rhythm who decided\, as Hobgood does here\, to explore texture-driven music\, elevating timbre and orchestration to equal standing with their better known musical accomplices. Hobgood is continually pulling rabbits out of hats\, getting me to rethink and re-feel songs I’ve heard thousands of times\, shining a light on hidden structure and interplays I had never noticed before. From meter shifts to harmonic innovation and textural elegance\, tesseterra should be on every playlist for years to come.\n~DR. DANIEL J. LEVITIN\, MUSICOLOGIST\, PRODUCER\, AND AUTHOR OF THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON MUSIC \n

SUMMARY:Tchaikovsky. Album Op. 72 -By Asiya Korepanova
DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nClosing Reception: TBD \nThrough January 25\, 2019 \n\nTchaikovsky. Album Op. 72: by Asiya Korepanova \nThis exhibition is by the illustrious Russian pianist\, Asiya Korepanova. It showcases 18 works in mixed media\, all of which are inspired by Tchaikovsky’s last piano work\, “Morceaux opus 72.” The collection represents impressions\, images\, and feelings based on the work. The Tchaikovsky work struck Asiya\, because “you can hear sadness written in a major key\,” she says. \nThe Album Op. 72 was originally issued in 2010\, and is dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the composer’s birth. The premiere performance took place in Moscow’s International House of Music on October 28\, 2010. \nClick below to learn more and read her corresponding poems that go along with these drawings: \nhttps://www.asiyakorepanova.com/tchaikovsky-album-op-72 \nAsiya Korepanova is a creative force. Her virtuosity as a pianist is best defined by a supreme level of technical aptitude\, combined with her acutely individualized musical interpretations. A broad and unique artist\, she expresses herself through several mediums; transcription\, visual arts\, poetry and composition. Through exploring and combining these art forms\, Asiya continually rediscovers new ways to apply her creativity. Having an extensive piano repertoire\, she is most fond of performing entire piano cycles. She is currently the only pianist to perform the complete 24 Franz Liszt Etudes at the same recital\, a collection of pieces notorious for their prowess and dexterity\, each etude effectively serving as a symphonic poem within itself. \nLearn more here: https://www.asiyakorepanova.com/about \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\nPhoto by Emil Matveev

SUMMARY:Scripted: Carole P. Kunstadt
DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nClosing Reception: September 27\, 2018 5:00 – 8:00 pm | More Info \nThrough September 30\, 2018 \n\nUnion Arts Center presents Scripted: Carole P. Kunstadt\, a solo exhibition featuring selections from Kunstadt’s Sacred Poem and Markings Series are a vehicle for the exploration of life’s vulnerabilities\, an expression of gratitude and a platform for sanctity\, contemplation and playfulness. \nOn display in Gallery One through September 30\, 2018 Gallery Hours: Tues/Wed 1 – 4 pm\, Thurs/Fri 4 – 7 pm\, Sat/Sun. by appointment only. \n \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\nI received a BFA\, magna cum laude\, from Hartford Art School\, West Hartford\, Connecticut\, with a concentration in two-dimensional studies and continued with postgraduate studies at the Akademie der Bildenen Künste in Munich\, Germany. \nAs a collagist\, painter\, book arts and fiber artist I often invoke a metaphysical quality of contemplation and timelessness. My works on/of paper reference the material of antique books\, music manuscripts\, ephemera and photo postcards – deconstructing paper\, images and text\, and using it in metaphorical ways. Through the exploration and manipulation of the antique materials\, history\, memory and time merge in a hybrid form. My devotion to books is inspired by the ability of the written word to take the reader to other places through stories\, poems and prayers. My process reveals how language can become visual through re-interpretation. \nI have been selected as one of eight yearly solo exhibitions at the Woodstock Artists Association & Museum by Gallery Owner Kenise Barnes scheduled for December 2018. \nI am honored to be the recipient of the 2017 Kuniyoshi Fund Award selected by members of\nThe Kuniyoshi Fund Committee in cooperation with the Woodstock Artists Association & Museum Award Committee as well as the Medal of Honor & The Anna Walinska Memorial Award in 2017 by the National Association of Women Artists. \nIn celebration of the Sunken Garden Poetry Festival’s 25th Anniversary in 2017\, the Hill-Stead Museum\, Farmington\, CT presented Boundless: Altered Book in Contemporary Art – I guest curated three unique approaches to transforming and exploring the malleability of the form\, creating new structures and experiences of the codex. Works by Erin Walrath\, Chris Perry and Carole P. Kunstadt were installed among the many rare first editions and early volumes in the Pope family’s historic personal library. \nMay – July 2018\, ArtsWestchester’s Inaugural Triennial showcases my new series\, PRESSING ON\, having been recently previewed in Paper\, Rock\, Scissors at Five Points Gallery\, Torrington\, CT.  My Sacred Poems were showcased in Books Undone: the art of altered books in contemporary art\, Penn College\, Williamsport\, PA and in WORD 2016 at The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art\, Peekskill\, NY. The Museum of Biblical Art\, New York\, NY featured my complete Old Testament Seriesin the exhibition As Subject and Object: Contemporary Book Artists Explore Sacred Hebrew Texts. Representative works from the Old Testament Series were featured in And The Word Is…. in the Gershman Gallery at the University of the Arts\, Philadelphia\, PA and were included in Somewhere Between Creation and Destruction\, Joseloff Gallery\, Hartford Art School. SUMMARY:Abstraction: Eileen Karakashian
DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Sunday\, May 20\, 2018\, 6:00-8:00PM | More Info \nThrough Saturday\, June 23\, 2018 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\nEileen Karakashian received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1994 from the School of Visual Arts in New York City\, majoring in Advertising Design. Since graduation she was an art director in advertising\, producing both national TV and print campaigns. Her work has been featured in Adweek and Advertising Age magazine. She continued her fine art studies at the Art Students League in NYC\, concentrating on painting\, design\, color\, composition and collage. \nToday\, Karakashian makes paintings and mixed media artworks. By emphasising aesthetics\, Eileen tries to develop forms that do not follow logical criteria\, but are based only on subjective associations and formal parallels\, which incite the viewer to make new personal associations. Her paintings are based on formal associations which open a unique poetic vein. \nMultilayered images arise in which the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality is questioned. By rejecting an objective truth and global cultural narratives\, she creates with daily\, recognizable elements\, an unprecedented situation in which the viewer is confronted with the conditioning of his own perception and has to reconsider his biased position.

DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Sunday\, May 20th\, 2018\, 6:00-8:00PM | More Info \nThrough Monday\, July 9th \n\n“Appalachian Spring” seeks to give agency to the women of Appalachia\, from New York to Georgia\, and highlight the rich heritage that the region has contributed to American culture\, as well as the stereotypes it has perpetuated. Despite its poverty\, religious misconceptions\, perceived political leanings and propensity to be taken advantage of for its natural resources\, Appalachia is filled with a distinction and beauty that is often overlooked. \nAli Printz uses vintage photographs and sculptural fabric to reconstruct the lives of the forgotten women of Appalachia\, while combining elements of contemporary issues facing the region that have been constants in her West Virginia upbringing. Miners\, snake charmers\, weavers\, debutants\, and shamans; all have a place for women as cornerstones in the whole of the culture. Through the traditions of folk art and craft combined with traditional portraiture and figuration\, Printz hopes to reconstruct the importance of women’s roles as caretakers\, heroines\, and constants that permeates the culture and history of Appalachia. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Artist\nAli Printz is a historical figurative painter and curator who splits her time between Brooklyn and Philadelphia. She works with various mediums including oil\, acrylic\, collage\, sewn fabric\, as well as technology based mediums. Ali runs a curatorial and artistic collective with artist and fellow Sotheby’s alum Jenna Gard\, known as NewYorkKillsArtists\, which showcases the work of unrepresented artists by challenging them to make political and social statements. Her most recent projects include “Debtfair\,” a piece by Occupy Museums in the 2017 Whitney Biennial\, “Appalachian Spring” a traveling solo show\, and a number of group shows in 2018-19. \n\n\nAli was born in Martinsburg\, West Virginia and considers herself an Appalachian artist. She has lived and worked in Spain\, Panama\, and Washington\, D.C\, before moving to New York City for graduate school in 2010. She received her BFA in Painting and a BA in Art History from West Virginia University in 2009 and an MA in Contemporary Art from Sotheby’s Institute of Art in 2012. She is currently pursuing a cross disciplinary PhD in Modern and Contemporary Appalachian Art and Painting at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University.
