In 1999\, as a teen-aged prizewinner of the Cleveland International Piano Competition\, Primakov was praised by Donald Rosenberg of the Cleveland Plain Dealer: “How many pianists can make a line sing as the Moscow native did on this occasion? Every poignant phrase took ethereal wing. Elsewhere the music soared with all of the turbulence and poetic vibrancy it possesses. Two supper jazz lounge shows with The Adrien Chevalier Quartet  \n  \nRoost Restaurant is happy to invite you to the Jazz Lounge at Union Arts Center! Presented by Mz. Valentine\, May’s Jazz Lounge will showcase The Adrien Chevalier Quartet\, featuring violinist Adrien Chevalier\, Vinny Raniolo on guitar\, Hyuna Park on piano\, and Julian Smith on bass. \nBorn in Provence\, South of France\, into a family of violinists\, Adrien Chevalier began his musical education at the Avignon Classical Conservatory\, where he studied for 12 years before moving to Paris: there he developed his passion for Gypsy jazz and Eastern European music. He created Pad Brapad\, a musical ensemble specializing in Balkan folklore\, with whom he performed all over Europe\, participating in the most renowned Word Music festivals. Adrien Chevalier then settled down in the French capital and joined the Grüss Circus orchestra\, while also studying at the CMDL jazz school with master violinist Didier Lockwood. \nIn 2011 he moved to New York City where he co-founded the Avalon Jazz Band. Adrien Chevalier continued his work as a film composer (Canal +\, France 3…) and founded the Hot Club of New York with whom he performed at the New York Hot Jazz Festival in 2014. Adrien Chevalier often collaborates with renowned artists and tours regularly in Europe\, South America and Asia. \nIn 2015\, he created Aramis Entertainment\, an agency specializing in authentic\, acoustic music for private events\, contributing to the New York trad and swing scene’s growth and prosperity. \nAdrien is currently preparing his first solo album with compositions inspired by Gypsy Jazz\, Swing and Eastern European folklore. \n******** \nWe have two dinner seatings upstairs with the concert: \nDoors open at 5pm first come first served \n6pm (arrive by 5:30) and 8pm (arrive by 7:45) \nPlease arrive promptly. Her career as a commercial artist began over 40 years ago after training at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) where she was awarded the top honor in Illustration. \nBetsy is celebrating the release of her 12th picture book\, Jewels of the Sea… The Hunt for Floating Treasure which was just chosen as one of Kirkus Magazine’s “Great Indie Books Worth Discovering”. Kirkus is widely known as “the world’s toughest book critics“. You can read their full review of Jewels of the Sea HERE. \nBetsy began illustrating books for traditional publishing houses. Years later\, she created her own publishing company\, Puddle Jump Press. Two of her books are collaborations with award winning singer/songwriter Christine Lavin. Amoeba Hop garnered a “Best Books” award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The book that followed\, Hole in the Bottom of the Sea\, received an outstanding review: “if the fate of the planet is in the hands of our children\, then reading them books like this might be a wise idea.”–Kirkus Reviews \nBetsy grew up and still lives in the beautiful Hudson River Valley just north of New York City. Pogády has played over 30 recitals for “Live Music NOW!”. Pogády decided to take this concept to the next level and has been performing the Sonatas and Partitas by J.S. Bach in the New York City subway throughout his studies at the Manhattan School of Music until present. “Most of these people have never heard this kind of music before\, and yet it touches them on a basic human level\, because this music is just SO good\,” he says. \nPogády gave his solo debut with orchestra at age 11 at the Wiener Konzerthaus in Vienna after winning the 1st prize at the Tsusuki Violin Competition as the youngest contestant. \nHe participated three times at Austria’s nationwide music competition “Prima La Musica” and won the 1st prize each time. He was also honored with special prizes by the Austrian String Society and the Raiffeisen Bank for extraordinary results at this competition. \nPogády earned his Master’s Degree in Violin Performance under the tutelage of Maestro Pinchas Zukerman at the Manhattan School of Music\, where he was awarded a full scholarship. \nBorn in Bratislava (Slovakia)\, Pogády moved with his family to Austria as a child and began his violin studies at age 7. Just one year later he was admitted to the Bruckner Conservatory Pre-college in Linz. DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Sunday November 28th\, 12:00PM-3:00PM | More Info \nThrough Monday\, January 31\, 2022 in Gallery Two \n\nEileen Karakashian \nEileen received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1994 from the\nSchool of Visual Arts in New York City\, majoring in Advertising Design.\nSince graduation she was an art director in advertising\, producing both\nnational TV and print campaigns. Her work has been featured in Adweek\nand Advertising Age magazine. She continued her fine art studies at the Art\nStudents League in NYC\, concentrating on painting\, design\, color\, composition\nand collage. \nToday\, Karakashian makes paintings and mixed media artworks. By\nemphasizing aesthetics\, Eileen tries to develop forms that do not follow logical\ncriteria\, but are based only on subjective associations and formal parallels\,\nwhich incite the viewer to make new personal associations. Her paintings are\nbased on formal associations which open a unique poetic vein. Multilayered\nimages arise in which the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality\nis questioned. By rejecting an objective truth and global cultural narratives\, she\ncreates with daily\, recognizable elements\, an unprecedented situation in which\nthe viewer is confronted with the conditioning of his own perception and has\nto reconsider his biased position. \nColor and texture are the foundations to my paintings. The mixed media and\nacrylic paintings I create all usually start with a color idea and then evolve into a\ncomposition in which color and texture are the primary subjects. By applying\nabstraction\, I create intense personal moments created by means of rules and\nomissions\, acceptance and refusal. As my interest in drawing and photography grew\, I entered college as an art major but turbulent times and my interest in social issues led me to a career in mental health. Then life and responsibility eventually turned me to a corporate career. My one constant throughout was my love for art and photography. \nI am now happily devoting my time to making and sharing photographs. (Oh\, how proud my father would be.) DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Sunday\, April 25\, 2021\, 12 PM – 3 PM | More Info \nThrough July 2021 \n\n“As a multidisciplinary artist working in both fine and graphic arts\, I have been fortunate to live a ‘creative life’ since graduating with a BS in Fine Art from the University of Bridgeport in 1976. While working in creative design and illustration positions including The New Haven Register\, DC and Marvel Comics\, NBC and CNBC\, I have kept up my work in painting and drawing\, having my first solo show\, “A Sense of Place\,” at the Edward Hopper House (now Museum) in Nyack\, NY in 1993. Following this successful show\, I became a founding member of the cooperative Piermont (NY) Flywheel Gallery where I exhibited for a number of years before eventual representation by the Allen Sheppard Gallery in Piermont and New York City’s Chelsea arts district. There were four successful solo exhibits with this gallery. \nSince then\, I have exhibited in many juried (including some jurists of note)\, group and solo shows in and around NYC\, including at the annual national juried show at the Rockport (MA) Art Association & Museum\, where I garnered a Gold Medal for Excellence in Painting.  Also among these shows was a regular showing of seven solo exhibitions at Chef Peter Kelley’s (Iron Chef winner) restaurant\, the Freelance Cafe in Piermont. I have also donated numerous works to various non-profit organizations’ fund raising efforts throughout the years\, and am a former Board member of the Edward Hopper House Museum. \n For the past 15 years\, another focus has been on large-scale graphic mural designs for many major institutions such as Columbia University\, New York Presbyterian Hospitals\, the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh\, Montefiore Medical Center\, and the Garden of Dreams Foundation of Madison Square Garden among others. These internationally award-winning graphic\, narrative works\, which often incorporate my fine art and photography\, can be seen at www.KimakDesign.com . \nBeginning in 2019\, I switched my long-time painting and drawing focus from works in pastel\, to larger pieces in acrylic on canvas. I focus on light and form\, using abstraction and realism in the Edward Hopper mold (among other influences – I am also a fan of Fairfield porter\, Richard Diebenkorn\, etc..) to express my feelings about the world around me\, focusing on beauty in the play of light on what is\, often times\, seemingly ordinary subject matter. Indeed\, a 2019 solo show at the ArtSuite Gallery in Piermont\, NY was entitled “Explorations in Light and Form.” I am scheduled for inclusion in a group show later this year at the Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson\, NY. Doors open @ 5 PM. \nNorman Galinsky captures the essence of energy in his art\, creating works that depict stillness in motion.  \nHis work represents the relationship between the energetic and quantum nature of reality and the spiritual essence embodied by art. He believes that art expression is energy itself\, an aspect of what the Chinese term Qi. Using a vocabulary of abstract geometric forms and free-hand applied marks\, patterns are developed that contain energy and facilitate its flow. These compositions are created through an intuitive\, meditative approach\, a practice of focused attention and intention. The images suggest emissions of waves and particles\, vibratory fields\, and networks. Often sacred geometric shapes and proportions and converging circular forms are used to generate a central focus—a “stillpoint”—that inspires contemplation.  \nThis exhibition is being presented in Gallery Two. \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\nAfter an early career in industry—in applied research in chemical engineering\, Norman Galinsky turned fully to art\, earning an MFA degree from Columbia University. At Columbia\, he studied painting with Philip Guston\, Jack Tworkov\, and Stamos\, and printmaking with Bob Blackburn and Tony Harrison. He also studied with George Tooker and Will Barnet at the Art Students League\, and with Henry Pearson at the New School. Artists Stephen Greene and Richard Pousette-Dart were friends and mentors. \nGalinsky’s art has also been inspired and informed by his background in science and engineering\, by his ongoing interest and study of meditative and energy-healing disciplines and consciousness\, as well as by his more than 35-year study\, practice\, and teaching of Chinese martial and healing arts\, including Taiji Quan and qigong. He sees his work as related to the emerging field of “NeuroArts\,” the science of how art measurably changes the brain and the body to promote health and well-being. \nNorman Galinsky had his first exhibit in New York City in 1977 at the Jock Truman Gallery (formerly The Betty Parsons Gallery) and has been exhibiting in solo and group exhibitions ever since. D.\, 1968 \nTom Artin is a photographer living in Rockland County\, New York. His subjects range from landscapes\, seascapes and cityscapes to portraits\, florals and still lifes.  Artin began taking\, developing\, and printing images in the early 1950s.  \nThe majority of Artin’s photographs originate as medium format images shot on film with vintage Rolleiflexes and a Hasselblad\, though he also works with 4”x5” and 8”x10” view cameras.  In recent years\, he has added digital cameras to his toolbox\, specifically several Sony cameras outfitted with Carl Zeiss lenses.  In the digital lightroom\, he processes images scanned from negatives and transparencies in Photoshop and prints on Hahnemühle water-color type papers via Conetech Piezography\, a Quad-tone digital black and white printing process developed for the Epson inkjet printers. \nIn the 1950’s Artin outfitted his own dedicated darkroom at home and devoted his high school senior chemistry project to the chemistry of photography\, which included fabricating and printing on his own photographic paper.  In 1956\, he worked as photographic assistant to William Vandivert\, staff photographer for Life and Time magazines\, and one of the founders of Magnum.  Tom’s photographic career ran in parallel with a career as medieval scholar and college teacher\, which he left in 1979 to pursue yet a third a career as a professional jazz musician.  \nIn recent decades\, Artin’s work has been primarily in the fine-art category\, though he has done fashion and other commercial photography for both print and the internet.  Artin’s studio\, in Sparkill\, NY\, serves also as his lightroom.  His images and fine art posters are sold world-wide. DESCRIPTION:Sparkill Concert Series presents a program of Romantic Sonatas for cello and piano. Robert Burkhart\, Oxana Mikhailoff\, Vassily Primakov \nCellist Robert Burkhart combines a deep commitment to the existing cello repertoire with what the New Yorker magazine calls an “adventurous” spirit in new music. With performance credits at Alice Tully Hall\, Bargemusic\, Carnegie Weill Recital Hall\, Merkin Hall\, and The Rose Studio at Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center\, Robert has also appeared as a soloist throughout Japan as a member of the New York Symphonic Ensemble\, and been featured in recital on WQXR’s “Young Artist Showcase.” \nAt the center of new music in New York\, Robert has performed with the American Modern Ensemble\, Argento New Music Project\, Fireworks Ensemble\, Newspeak\, and SONYC. Recent collaborations include Uri Caine\, Georg Friedrich Haas\, Aaron Jay Kernis\, Steve Mackey\, Joan Tower\, Charles Wourinen\, and Chen Yi. SUMMARY:Rockland Jazz Collective FREE Open Rehearsals
DESCRIPTION:The Rockland Jazz Collective is a new 16 piece jazz big band organized by Rockland County natives and jazz luminaries Scott Reeves – trombone\, Richard Sussman – piano\, and Don Falzone – bass. The band’s members feature some of the most outstanding jazz musicians residing in the lower Hudson Valley. They will be holding open rehearsals at the Union Arts Center on the first & third Thursday of every month from 7:30-9:30. These rehearsals will be FREE and open to the public! So come on down to UAC and enjoy some great jazz AND enjoy the great art displayed on our walls. The band would love to see you there! Student musicians will especially benefit from seeing how an arrangement is rehearsed and put together into a cohesive form.

DESCRIPTION:About The Exhibit\n\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, August 1\, 5:00 – 7:00PM | More Info \nThrough Friday\, September 27\, 2019 \n\nThis series of drawings was begun during an Artist Fellowship at the Creative Glass Center of America\, Wheaton Arts Center in 2014. The most recent edition was created at Urban Glass in Brooklyn\, NY in 2019. \nIn this body of work I work directly on paper\, drawing with molten glass. As in all work with hot glass\, the artist must work quickly- almost as if it were a dance. The resulting imagery reflects this sense of immediacy\, creating gestural marks that reflect the quality of molten glass itself. \n \n \n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\nJoan Harmon received her Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts from the California College of Art where she began working in hot glass and worked directly with William Morris and Dale Chihuly at Pilchuck Glass School\, Stanwood\, Washington in its early years. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Drawing and Sculpture from Rutgers University. Harmon has received numerous grants and fellowships including an Honorarium from Burning Man in 2017. She is a sculptor and multimedia artist who works in a variety of media including cast cement\, wood\, fired clay\, glass and wax and sometimes incorporating sound and light.

This concert features The Laurence Hobgood Trio: Laurence Hobgood\, piano\, Jared Schonig\, drums\, and Matthew Clohesy\, bass – with The Solar String Quartet- Leonor Falcon and Tomoko Omura\, violin; Jen Herman\, viola; and Brian Sanders\, cello. \nClick here for Video \nOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\nt e s s e t e r r a is Laurence’s new program of standards re-woven for jazz trio and string quartet. Titles are as diverse as Wichita Lineman\, Blackbird\, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic\, We Shall Overcome — even a Chopin Waltz (Opus 64 no. 2 in C#Minor)\, all vividly arranged in a style we’re calling “third stream nouveau” — the sound of the string quartet brings a definite classical element to this project\, but the central idea is for the trio to shine as a fully functioning jazz trio\, weaving improvisatory exploration within the fabric of thoroughly composed orchestrations. \nThe words “weaving” and “fabric” are quite intentional; the word t e s s e t e r r a  is Laurence’s invention\, and translates roughly as “the sonic fabric of the world.” It’s an amalgam of tessitura and terra. Terra is latin for ‘earth’; ‘tessitura’ means ‘texture’ in Italian but musically refers to the most favorable portion of a voice’s (or instrument’s) overall range. So perhaps an even more accurate definition would be “the world’s most pleasing musical textures.” \n \nLaurence Hobgood’s new album is grounded in a deep and rich musicality… like nothing I’ve heard in decades. It is at different times surprising\, thought-provoking\, nuanced\, and always exquisite. What do Debussy\, Ravel\, Miles Davis and Johnny Cash have in common? They were all superb crafters of melody\, harmony and rhythm who decided\, as Hobgood does here\, to explore texture-driven music\, elevating timbre and orchestration to equal standing with their better known musical accomplices. Hobgood is continually pulling rabbits out of hats\, getting me to rethink and re-feel songs I’ve heard thousands of times\, shining a light on hidden structure and interplays I had never noticed before. Album Op. 72: by Asiya Korepanova \nThis exhibition is by the illustrious Russian pianist\, Asiya Korepanova. It showcases 18 works in mixed media\, all of which are inspired by Tchaikovsky’s last piano work\, “Morceaux opus 72.” The collection represents impressions\, images\, and feelings based on the work. The Tchaikovsky work struck Asiya\, because “you can hear sadness written in a major key\,” she says. \nThe Album Op. 72 was originally issued in 2010\, and is dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the composer’s birth.
