SUMMARY:Sparkill Jazz Series: Laura Anglade with the Ben Rosenblum Trio
DESCRIPTION:PURCHASE TICKETS\n \nFrench/American singer Laura Anglade is reminiscent of many of the great traditional vocal stylists of the 20th century\, but her voice is uniquely her own. As she digs emotionally and eloquently into a lyric\, her story-telling abilities portray a soul beyond her years. \n  \nHer debut release\, ‘I’ve Got Just About Everything’ (Justin Time Records\, 2019) saw the vocalist\, along with her quintet\, fearlessly plunging headlong into a wide range of material drawn from both the Broadway stage as well as the Great American Songbook. On her Juno-nominated sophomore recording\, ‘Venez Donc Chez Moi’ (Justin Time Records\, 2022)\, Laura teams up with Montreal guitarist Sam Kirmayer and New York based accordionist Benjamin Rosenblum on two tracks. It is an homage of sorts; a nod to Laura’s beloved France. The record features French classics made famous by Barbara\, Charles Trenet\, Edith Piaf\, and Michel Legrand to name a few. \n  \nLaura leads an active international touring schedule and has performed at venues including Olympia (Paris)\, Royal Festival Hall (London)\, Town Hall (New York City)\, the Ace Theatre Hotel (Los Angeles)\, and the main stage at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal. She opened for Gregory Porter at the Victoria Jazz Festival (summer 2022)\, and Melody Gardot (fall 2022)\, joining her across the east and west coasts of the US and Europe. She is currently based in Toronto. \n  \nAward-winning New York City jazz pianist and accordionist Ben Rosenblum has been described as “mature beyond his years\,” (Sea of Tranquility)\, an “impressive talent” (All About Jazz)\, who “caresses [the music] with the reverence it merits” (Downbeat Magazine). Since the release of his debut trio album\, Instead (4 stars\, Downbeat)\, Rosenblum has toured extensively with his trio and sextet throughout the United States\, including multiple trips to the Northeast\, Midwest\, South and West Coast\, as well as internationally in Canada\, Europe and Japan. He was a featured soloist at Carnegie Hall’s Stern-Perelman Auditorium – with Reona Ito’s New York Harmonic Band – and has appeared at prestigious venues throughout the world\, including at the Appel Room at Lincoln Center\, Kuumbwa Jazz Center\, Ravinia\, Himawari-No-Sato Concert Hall in Yokohama\, Bird’s Eye in Basel and the Library of Congress. Rosenblum’s second trio album in 2018\, River City\, was called “richly romantic” and “well-realized” by JAZZIZ Magazine\, which featured the title track as part of their Best of Fall 2018 CD. Rosenblum released his third album\, Kites and Strings\, in 2020\, which is the first to feature him on both piano and accordion alongside his new sextet\, the Nebula Project. In 2020\, the Nebula Project was voted runner-up for Best New Artist in JazzTimes’ Readers’ Poll. After the Nebula Project’s follow-up album in 2023\, A Thousand Pebbles\, Rosenblum was featured in an article in Downbeat Magazine’s May 2023 issue. Rosenblum has been privileged to share the stage with many highly acclaimed jazz musicians\, including extensive work with Curtis Lundy\, Winard Harper\, Deborah Davis and Chris Washburne\, as well as appearances with Bobby Watson\, Sean Jones\, TS Monk\, Warren Wolf\, Eliot Zigmund\, and many others. Rosenblum’s musical interests also extend beyond jazz to include work in numerous world music scenes\, including musical styles from Brazil\, Peru\, Croatia\, Bulgaria\, India\, Ireland\, Jewish traditions and more. \n  \nWebsites: https://lauraanglade.com/home / www.benrosenblummusic.com \n  \nInstagram: @laura__anglade / @benrosenblummusic \n  \nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/langlademusic/\, www.facebook.com/benrosenblummusic \n \n PURCHASE TICKETS

SUMMARY:Sparkill Concert Series Presents: Matt Nakoa in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Matt Nakoa was born on a small goat farm in rural Upstate NY and studied piano with Anita B. Humer\, a student of Kyriena Siloti and Freda Rosenblatt. Nakoa attended Berklee College of Music in Boston and has made his career as a pianist\, singer\, guitarist\, and composer in many musical genres. The Boston Globe has declared him “a hot-handed phenom who can go from Chopin to beer-drenched honky-tonk in one set.” In addition to performing his own works\, Nakoa regularly appears with folk music icon Tom Rush\, national touring British Invasion act The Brit Pack\, and gives recitals of the classical masters. When not touring\, Nakoa divides his time between the New York’s Hudson Valley and NYC. \nOn May 5th Matt will be performing works by Mozart\,Chopin\, Liszt\, Rachmaninoff and his own compositions entitled ” Antique Dances” \nNotes From the Composer (“Antique Dances”) \nThese melodies were rediscovered in notebooks from my youth\, where they had collected dust for decades. In fact\, a juvenile incarnation of Waltz No. 1 appeared in my very first piano recital! In early 2012\, at the urging of my friend\, pianist Vassily Primakov\, I went to work resurrecting a few of the tunes. I polished them up\, fitted them with harmony\, and attempted to breathe new life into them. I took myself to an antique shop\, seeking inspiration for my own “antiques”. As I crouched before landscapes and self-portraits by unknown painters\, I imagined their toils and triumphs at the canvas. As I read brittle\, yellowed love letters\, I imagined soft\, flushed faces pressing together. I found innumerable old-world toys – model ships and dancing dolls – and heard little ghosts giggling. As I pawed through bins of old photographs\, I peered into faces no one recognized while clearing out the attic. I was stirred by the pervasiveness of impermanence. I was spurred to add my relics to the great pile. \nOn April 13th\, 2012\, the first six pieces of this collection were premiered by the great Vassily Primakov at the University of Vermont. I attended\, of course\, and it was joyous trip with much celebrating. \nThe remaining six works were compiled in 2020 while retreating at my childhood home in Smyrna\, NY. They had been written at various times since the premiere of the first batch\, and are also largely based on youthful sketches. In one remarkable moment of divine creative grace\, my father and I were watching silent 8mm footage of my grandparents when I heard a melody floating through the ether. I recognized it from a long-forgotten brass quintet I had attempted and abandoned in the 8th grade. When I rushed to find the notes on the piano\, it poured out in its complete form. \nFor more about Matt\, recordings and other releases\, visit www.MattNakoa.com \n \n\nPURCHASE TICKETS

As student of the famous Lev Oborin\, the winner of the First Chopin Competition in 1927\, Voskresensky adopted his teacher’s refined romanticism and perfect taste in harmony with the piano’s splendid sound. The images evoked by his playing suggest contrasting musical colors\, never out of harmony\, and a charming legato inducing the instrument to sing. ‘His playing fascinates audiences with its artistry\, cordiality and ingeniousness. Mikhail Voskresensky is a very talented and intelligent musician’\, wrote Oborin about his pupil. Mikhail Voskresensky is Prize-winner of the Schumann International Competition in Berlin\, the International Competition in Rio de Janeiro\, the George Enescu International Competition in Bucarest and the Van Cliburn Competition in Fort Worth. \nIn 1957 the young pianist took part in the Prague Spring Festival where he performed European premiere of Shostakovich Second Piano concerto with the presence of Shostakovich himself. He performed with more than 150 conductors in almost all countries of Europe\, Japan\, Korea\, China\, Australia\, USA\, Mexico\, Cuba\, Kenia\, Zimbabwe and Peru. He had wonderful critics in international festivals in Tours\, Colmar and Aix-en-Provence: “Voskresensky is not only an outstanding virtuoso\, he lives in music and plunges into its depths…” Semaines Musicales\, Tours. During his New York debut his performance of Liszt Sonata and 5-th Scriabin sonata was highly estimated. His colleagues in chamber music were Borodin quartet\, Shostakovich quartet\, Tokyo quartet in New York\, violinists M.Yashvili (all violin sonatas of Beethoven in 2004-05 season)\, R.Nodel and P.Berman\, cellists E.Altman and A.Kniazev. Voskresensky’s large repertoire includes all Beethoven sonatas\, all works of Chopin\, 64 piano concertos with orchestra\, played with John Pritchard\, Franz Konwitschny\, Kurt Mazur\, Stanislav Scrowachewsky\, Eugeny Svetlanov\, Charles Dutoit etc. He recorded more than 50 CD’s. Among them all 27 concertos by Mozart\, Liszt’s sonata b minor\, all nocturnes\, preludes and sonatas by Chopin\, all sonatas and etudes by Scriabin\, Schumann’s carnivals op.9 and op.26\, Beethoven concerto No.3 in c minor\, Brahms second concerto B flat major\, etc …   \nMikhail Voskresensky is a distinguished professor at the Moscow Conservatory\, the chair of the professorship of piano faculty. His pupils have won 126 international prizes including 55 gold medals. Between them Stanislav Igolinsky\, Amir Tebenihin\, Temirzhan Erzhanov\, Yakov Kasman\, Alexander Ghindin\, Sergej Koudriakov\, Sergei Kuznezov\, Evelina Vorontsova\, Elena Kuznetsova\, Mikhail Yanovitsky\, Kooryeong Park\, Oleg Marshev\, Yury Favorin\, Varvara Nepomnyaschaya\, Sergey Neller\, Galina Chistyakova and Nikolay Khozyainov etc … In 2001-2004 professor Voskresensky taught in Toho Gakuen University in Tokyo where his pupils had won 12 different prizes including Akiko Yamamoto’s triumph at Schumann International competition in Zwickau in 2004. As a competition jurist Mikhail Voskresensky was in Sydney\, London\, Leeds\, Geneva\, Hamamatsu\, Tel Aviv\, Los Angeles and many others. He was jury member of the XIII (2007) and XIV (2011) Tchaikovsky competitions and constantly is the chairman of Scriabin International Competition in Moscow. \nNot so long ago he played the first concerto by Shostakovich in Beijing and the first concerto by Tchaikovsky in Shanghai under the button of Charles Dutoit. In the fall of 2007 during the celebration of the 100 anniversary of his teacher Lev Oborin\, Voskresensky played in the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory the Forth Concerto by Beethoven under the button of Vladimir Ashkenazi and The Second concerto by Brahms with Leonid Nikolaev.  \nOn June 2nd 2010 Mikhail Voskresensky completed his Mozart Piano Concertos Series; during 3 years all 27 Mozart piano concertos were performed and recorded live in the Maly (Small) Hall of Moscow Conservatory  under the direction of maestro Leonid Nikolaev (1940-2009) – 16 concertos and under the direction of maestro Konstantin Masluk (11 concertos). DESCRIPTION:“Oxana Mikhailoff performs “a journey through Chopin’s life. And it is also a journey through life itself” – Vassily Primakov\n\n\n\n\n\n“I remember hearing Oxana play Chopin on many occasions. For instance\, I have heard her 4th Ballade a number of times. Each time it had a new meaning\, a new “stage”. \nHer current selection of Chopin pieces is very personal – only those works that she is particularly close with and performed at different stages of her life. Now they once again come alive at this very special event”. \n-Vassily Primakov \n  \nOxana Mikhailoff was hailed in a recent review by Jon Sobel as “a titan of the Romantic Piano Literature.” Of her playing\, Vladimir Feltsman said “…(Oxana Mikhailoff) is a mature and accomplished musician…Her playing has character\, imagination\, and is poetic.
