SUMMARY:Artist Exhibitions: Ivan Pazlamatchev & Milbry Polk
DESCRIPTION:Gallery 1 Paintings By: IVAN PAZLAMATCHEV\nIvan Pazlamatchev is a Bulgarian American painter rooted in figurative realism. In his paintings\, the representational contemporary interpretation is backed by classical training\, received at the prestigious School for Fine Arts in Sofia\, Bulgaria. \nWith over 30 years of experience working as a fine artist\, Ivan has exhibited in galleries and museums inEurope and throughout the United States. Notably\, in 2008\, Pazlamatchev’s paintings were included in the Societe Nationale Des Beaux-Arts Salon at Carrousel du Louvre in Paris. In 2018 he had a comprehensive retrospective exhibit at the Art Gallery Georges Papazov in Bulgaria. In 1997\, his solo exhibition at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia represented the Painting portion in the Salon of the Arts ‘97. His work was selected in the Crocker-Kingsley National Competition 2021. He has received awards\, grants\, and invitations\, including to the Art Fusion Festival in Berlin\, Germany\, and has work residing in public and private collections\, including the S. C. Rockefeller\, Jr. collection. Ivan’s art is included in the Lunar Codex\, a digital archive of Contemporary Art\, which landed on the Lunar South Pole on February 22\, 2024 with the Intuitive Machines Odysseus mission. \nARTIST STATEMENTWhen thinking about food\, particularly of fruits and vegetables\, I find myself contemplating the journey from seed to plant\, and then onward to fruit and seed. It is hard to look at a Seed as being alive\, yet\, inside of it is the potential for a new Life. And… why not\, the imagination\, the idea\, for the new plant. It is fascinating to see the unfolding of a plant from a little seed. How it grows large and so complex in form and substance. All of the guiding principles for its character\, its archetype\, seem to have been stored in and now released\, from the Seed. (Many plant foods that we eat are Seeds. In various states of fulfillment.) The series of watercolor paintings\, depicting farms\, I named Cathedrals. It is in reference to the places where our physical nourishment comes from. For more information or sales inquiries\, please contact Ivan: ipazlamatchev@yahoo.com / 845-642-2560Instagram @ ivan_pazlamatchev_art \nGallery 2 Photographs by MILBRY POLK\nMilbry Polk was born in England and grew up in the U.S. and Egypt. She graduated from Radcliffe College\, Harvard University. She co-founded and served as executive director of Wings WorldQuest\, a nonprofit supporting women in science and exploration\, and was Vice-Chair of the Conference on Affordable World Security. Currently\, she works with The Explorers Club\, co-chairing the Global Exploration Summit and leading the Young Explorers Program in the Arctic. Milbry got her first camera at the age eight and has been photographing ever since. She has published her photography in numerous magazines and books and has exhibited in galleries in New York\, Hartford and elsewhere. She has participated in led and expeditions to Egypt\, Yemen\, Sudan\, Iran\, Saudi Arabia; Iran; Pakistan; Alaska; Nepal; Brazilian coast; Greenland; Canadian Arctic\, India; Chinese Tibet\, and the Andaman Sea. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors\, including the Sweeney Award\, the Explorers Club\, the Capt. J.-E. Bernier Medal\, Royal Canadian Geographic Society\, and the Anne Morrow Lindbergh Award2. She has served on the boards of the Explorers Club and the National Arts Club. She was featured in a CBS Sunday Morning segment\, which earned a Gracie Award. \nARTIST STATEMENTIn our chaotic world I have been drawn to places of peace and beauty\, places far from the modern world in space and time. I am inspired by the ever-changing landscape impacted by water and light. My favorite time of day is about a half an hour before sunrise on the cusp of light and dark. The pictures in this show were taken over the past 6 years in the far north of Canada\, the shores of Greenland\, and the coast of Maine. One\, image\, marked by the lack of water is of the ancient floor of the Tethys Sea which once covered North Africa. The strange rock formations in the desert were carved out first by currents and later\, once the water was gone\, by sand and wind. I try to capture a moment in time in an ever-changing landscape buffeted by water\, by storms\, by ice Illuminated by otherworldly lightVisit her website: www.milbrypolk.comFor more information or sales inquiries\, please contactMilbry at: milbry@post.harvard.edu / 914.522.2434Instagram @milbrypolk

SUMMARY:Sparkill Jazz Series: Laura Anglade with the Ben Rosenblum Trio
DESCRIPTION:PURCHASE TICKETS\n \nFrench/American singer Laura Anglade is reminiscent of many of the great traditional vocal stylists of the 20th century\, but her voice is uniquely her own. As she digs emotionally and eloquently into a lyric\, her story-telling abilities portray a soul beyond her years. \n  \nHer debut release\, ‘I’ve Got Just About Everything’ (Justin Time Records\, 2019) saw the vocalist\, along with her quintet\, fearlessly plunging headlong into a wide range of material drawn from both the Broadway stage as well as the Great American Songbook. On her Juno-nominated sophomore recording\, ‘Venez Donc Chez Moi’ (Justin Time Records\, 2022)\, Laura teams up with Montreal guitarist Sam Kirmayer and New York based accordionist Benjamin Rosenblum on two tracks. It is an homage of sorts; a nod to Laura’s beloved France. The record features French classics made famous by Barbara\, Charles Trenet\, Edith Piaf\, and Michel Legrand to name a few. \n  \nLaura leads an active international touring schedule and has performed at venues including Olympia (Paris)\, Royal Festival Hall (London)\, Town Hall (New York City)\, the Ace Theatre Hotel (Los Angeles)\, and the main stage at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal. She opened for Gregory Porter at the Victoria Jazz Festival (summer 2022)\, and Melody Gardot (fall 2022)\, joining her across the east and west coasts of the US and Europe. She is currently based in Toronto. \n  \nAward-winning New York City jazz pianist and accordionist Ben Rosenblum has been described as “mature beyond his years\,” (Sea of Tranquility)\, an “impressive talent” (All About Jazz)\, who “caresses [the music] with the reverence it merits” (Downbeat Magazine). Since the release of his debut trio album\, Instead (4 stars\, Downbeat)\, Rosenblum has toured extensively with his trio and sextet throughout the United States\, including multiple trips to the Northeast\, Midwest\, South and West Coast\, as well as internationally in Canada\, Europe and Japan. He was a featured soloist at Carnegie Hall’s Stern-Perelman Auditorium – with Reona Ito’s New York Harmonic Band – and has appeared at prestigious venues throughout the world\, including at the Appel Room at Lincoln Center\, Kuumbwa Jazz Center\, Ravinia\, Himawari-No-Sato Concert Hall in Yokohama\, Bird’s Eye in Basel and the Library of Congress. Rosenblum’s second trio album in 2018\, River City\, was called “richly romantic” and “well-realized” by JAZZIZ Magazine\, which featured the title track as part of their Best of Fall 2018 CD. Rosenblum released his third album\, Kites and Strings\, in 2020\, which is the first to feature him on both piano and accordion alongside his new sextet\, the Nebula Project. In 2020\, the Nebula Project was voted runner-up for Best New Artist in JazzTimes’ Readers’ Poll. After the Nebula Project’s follow-up album in 2023\, A Thousand Pebbles\, Rosenblum was featured in an article in Downbeat Magazine’s May 2023 issue. Rosenblum has been privileged to share the stage with many highly acclaimed jazz musicians\, including extensive work with Curtis Lundy\, Winard Harper\, Deborah Davis and Chris Washburne\, as well as appearances with Bobby Watson\, Sean Jones\, TS Monk\, Warren Wolf\, Eliot Zigmund\, and many others. Rosenblum’s musical interests also extend beyond jazz to include work in numerous world music scenes\, including musical styles from Brazil\, Peru\, Croatia\, Bulgaria\, India\, Ireland\, Jewish traditions and more. \n  \nWebsites: https://lauraanglade.com/home / www.benrosenblummusic.com \n  \nInstagram: @laura__anglade / @benrosenblummusic \n  \nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/langlademusic/\, www.facebook.com/benrosenblummusic \n \n PURCHASE TICKETS

SUMMARY:Artist Exhibitions: Mitch Eiss and Joan Hooker
DESCRIPTION:Gallery 1: A Journey: Photographs by Mitch Eiss\nI got my first film camera in the early 1960’s – a Kodak Brownie with a flash bulb – and that was the beginning of a life-long passion for capturing moments and people. As my interest in drawing and photography grew\, I entered college as an art major\, but turbulent times and my interest in social issues led me to a career in mental health. Then life and responsibility eventually turned me to a corporate career. My one constant throughout was my love for art and photography.\n\nI am now happily devoting my time to making and sharing photographs. (Oh\, how proud my father would be.) I have shot major events and small music club venues\, but primarily\, “I walk the streets.” Each of us can look at an object\, a person or scene\, and yet\, we all see\, feel and react differently. For inquiries\, please contact mitch@mitcheiss.photography\nhttps://www.mitcheiss.photography/ \nGallery 2: Paintings by Joan Hooker\nJoan Hooker is an oil painter who concentrates on still lifes\, striving to express the essence of her subjects as well as represent in her work the response which motivates her to paint those subjects. As Camille Corot said\, “Beauty in art is truth bathed in an impression from nature. While I strive for a conscientious imitation\, I yet never for an instant lose the emotion that has taken hold of me. Reality is one part of art; feeling completes it.”Joan’s early education came from the inspiration and tutelage of her grandfather\, Pennsylvania impressionist John F. Folinsbee\, and her uncle\, landscape and portrait painter Peter G. Cook. She received a Master of Fine Arts in painting from the New York Academy Graduate School of Figurative Art in 1993\, where she studied with Eric Fischl and Ted Schmidt among others. She had previously studied at Pratt Institute\, the Corcoran School of Art\, and received her B.A. from Smith College.Joan Hooker’s work has been exhibited at the National Academy of Design\, Hirschl & Adler Galleries\, Allen Sheppard Gallery\, Newington Cropsey Foundation Gallery\, Somerville Manning Gallery\, the Butler Institute of American Art\, the Penobscot Marine Museum\, Rockland Center for the Arts\, among many others. Her work is currently represented at the Newman Galleries in Philadelphia.  She lives and works in Rockland County\, NY.For inquiries\, please contact jwhooker@gmail.com.\nhttp://joanhooker.com/

SUMMARY:Artist Reception: James Kimak
DESCRIPTION:James Kimak: Painting Light\nArtist Statement\nFrom my start as an inker at Marvel Comics to work as a newspaper designer and illustrator\, to an Art Director in the early years of interactive media at NBC and CNBC\, to the creator/designer of murals for large health and education institutions\, I have always been active as an exhibiting fine artist. \nIn 2019\, I shifted from my previous focus on pastels to larger pieces in acrylic on canvas. From a gallery statement\, “Through the use of vibrant hues and strong light/shadow contrasts\, he skillfully captures the interplay between light and form in his paintings. Drawing inspiration from such renowned artists as Edward Hopper\, Degas\, and Fairfield Porter\, among others\, his works suggest a hint of abstraction along with its explicit realism.  ‘Something catches my eye when I’m not actively seeking a subject. Often\, these subjects have a strong structural shape at their core.’ While his paintings are based on specific locations that evoke a distinct sense of place\, he also brings his own imagination into the compositions\, often omitting or altering details to align with his vision.” \nSince 2005\, I have also used my graphic and photography skills—often including images of my fine art—in the creation of narrative murals for such clients as Columbia University\, Montefiore Hospital\, NYU Langone Medical Center and New York Presbyterian Hospitals\, among others. \nI earned my bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Bridgeport. I have participated in numerous exhibitions in galleries in New York and New England\, and in museums\, including Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center\, the Parrish Art Museum\, and the American Museum of Illustration\, winning a number of awards\, including Gold Medals\, along the way. My newest honor is the inclusion of a projected image of my painting\, Man with Tattoo\, Havana\, in a dance and choral stage performance\, PORTRAITS\, at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center (6/2024) \nFollowing my first solo show at the Edward Hopper House in 1993\, I became a founding member of the Flywheel Gallery in Piermont\, NY. Afterwards\, I was represented by the Allen Sheppard Gallery in New York City\, where I held several solo shows. I have also shown at Carrie Haddad in Hudson\, NY\, Edgewater Gallery in Middlebury\, VT\, the Jessie Edwards Gallery on Block Island\, RI\, Ned Kelly & Company in Tappan\, NY and Perry Lawson Fine Art in Nyack\, NY. \nI live and work in Rockland County\, NY. \nFollow James on Instagram: @kimakart \nVisit James’ website: www.jameskimakfineart.com

SUMMARY:Sparkill Concert Series Presents: Matt Nakoa in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Matt Nakoa was born on a small goat farm in rural Upstate NY and studied piano with Anita B. Humer\, a student of Kyriena Siloti and Freda Rosenblatt. Nakoa attended Berklee College of Music in Boston and has made his career as a pianist\, singer\, guitarist\, and composer in many musical genres. The Boston Globe has declared him “a hot-handed phenom who can go from Chopin to beer-drenched honky-tonk in one set.” In addition to performing his own works\, Nakoa regularly appears with folk music icon Tom Rush\, national touring British Invasion act The Brit Pack\, and gives recitals of the classical masters. When not touring\, Nakoa divides his time between the New York’s Hudson Valley and NYC. \nOn May 5th Matt will be performing works by Mozart\,Chopin\, Liszt\, Rachmaninoff and his own compositions entitled ” Antique Dances” \nNotes From the Composer (“Antique Dances”) \nThese melodies were rediscovered in notebooks from my youth\, where they had collected dust for decades. In fact\, a juvenile incarnation of Waltz No. 1 appeared in my very first piano recital! In early 2012\, at the urging of my friend\, pianist Vassily Primakov\, I went to work resurrecting a few of the tunes. I polished them up\, fitted them with harmony\, and attempted to breathe new life into them. I took myself to an antique shop\, seeking inspiration for my own “antiques”. As I crouched before landscapes and self-portraits by unknown painters\, I imagined their toils and triumphs at the canvas. As I read brittle\, yellowed love letters\, I imagined soft\, flushed faces pressing together. I found innumerable old-world toys – model ships and dancing dolls – and heard little ghosts giggling. As I pawed through bins of old photographs\, I peered into faces no one recognized while clearing out the attic. I was stirred by the pervasiveness of impermanence. I was spurred to add my relics to the great pile. \nOn April 13th\, 2012\, the first six pieces of this collection were premiered by the great Vassily Primakov at the University of Vermont. I attended\, of course\, and it was joyous trip with much celebrating. \nThe remaining six works were compiled in 2020 while retreating at my childhood home in Smyrna\, NY. They had been written at various times since the premiere of the first batch\, and are also largely based on youthful sketches. In one remarkable moment of divine creative grace\, my father and I were watching silent 8mm footage of my grandparents when I heard a melody floating through the ether. I recognized it from a long-forgotten brass quintet I had attempted and abandoned in the 8th grade. When I rushed to find the notes on the piano\, it poured out in its complete form. \nFor more about Matt\, recordings and other releases\, visit www.MattNakoa.com \n \n\nPURCHASE TICKETS

SUMMARY:Artist Exhibition: Norman Galinsky and Alberto Reyes
DESCRIPTION:Experience the works of Norman Galinsky and Alberto Reyes. On display for purchase in the Union Arts Center from January 9th to April 9th. Make sure to mark your calendars\, you do not want to miss these ethereal works. \nGallery 1: Norman Galinsky\nNorman Galinsky’s abstract geometric art has been inspired and informed by his background in science and engineering\, and his ongoing interest and study of meditative and energy healing disciplines and consciousness explorations. \nHis work represents the intimate relationship between the energetic and quantum nature of reality and the spiritual essence embodied by art. He believes that art expression is energy itself –an aspect of what the Chinese term Qi\, the universal life energy. The images depict a “stillness in motion”\, drawing the viewer into a meditative dialog with the present moment. His over 30 year practice and teaching of Chinese martial arts\, Tai Ji Quan and qigong exercises\, as well as study of other energetic healing disciplines have been foundational in helping him generate\, cultivate\, and utilize energy patterns that often find their way into his images. Additionally\, his earlier career and professional background in chemical engineering was instrumental in combining his use of mathematics with “permutational” and intuitive approaches to making art. His understanding and study of sacred geometry became a roadmap to explore how energy\, science\, and esthetics can be related. \nwww.normangalinsky.com \nGallery 2: Alberto Hernandez Reyes\nAlberto Hernandez Reyes (b. Havana\, 1976) \nBehind the appearance of natural shapes\, hidden behind the beauty of the landscape is the living spirit of the world (Anima Mundi). That invisible\, but intuited\, soul manifests itself in multiple signs. A sustained contemplation makes us listen to the primal music that comes from the forest\, the mist in the morning transforms the old road into an unknown country\, a forgotten language makes us understand the underlying codes in the waves of the sea. So many messages\, many of which we are not conscious. \nThrough my paintings I have tried to explore the visuality of this ethereal dimension: The elements of Nature are recognizable on the surface of the canvas but\, as the viewer will see\, the representation patterns go beyond pure mimesis. It is about exploring and materializing that mystical world through atmospheres full of mystery\, giving trees almost human emotions\, concentrating\, or limiting color in an ascetic\, monochromatic range\, evoking silence. \nThe use of light is essential. The spaces addressed are practically surreal scenarios that gravitate between the perception of the birth of Creation and apocalyptic shadows. And light is capable here of tipping the balance towards one concept or another. \nLet this be an invitation to discover another physiognomy of the landscape through the inner vision of the artist. \nalbertohreyes.com

Why this is so is a mystery – and it teaches us something about the music business. When I first heard Gaisford in Philadelphia\, I was stunned: How could there be so good a cellist I had never heard\, or even heard of?  Evidently\, not every master is on the covers of magazines\, or the covers of CDs; some have unorthodox careers. Gaisford has a formidable technique and a formidable mind.  He can make a hundred sounds : fat\, thin\, spiky\, lyrical\, rich\, sickly\, piercing\, warm. “ \nOn the Barge series in New York\, Gaisford played with a grave mien throughout.  He gave the impression that he was not merely performing a sonata\, but doing something supremely important.  The Chief Critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer had a similar reaction\, calling Gaisford  “America’s greatest unknown cellist.”  The New York Times also stated that “Gaisford deserves more recognition.” \nGaisford continues to infuse with new life the great works of the past\, while fiercely advocating for the music of our own time. As soloist\, Mr. Gaisford has appeared with orchestras throughout the United States and Canada; among them the major orchestras of Saint Louis\, Seattle\, Toronto and Montreal\, under the direction of conductors such as Robert Spano\, David Zinman and Hermann Michael. Equally active as a recitalist and chamber musician\, Mr. Gaisford has performed throughout the U.S. and abroad in cities ranging from New York\, San Francisco and Berlin\, to Boston\, Rome and Tokyo. He has been a featured guest at major festivals throughout the world including New York City’s Mostly Mozart Festival\, the Chautauqua Festival\, the Caramoor Festival\, and the Davos Festival in Switzerland. Other festivals appearances include the RomaEuropa\, New Jersey’s Festival of the Atlantic\, Michigan’s Matrix Festival\, the Prince Albert Festival in Kauai\, the Aspen Music Festival and the Vail Valley Music Festival in Colorado. Mr. Gaisford has been a frequent guest on radio programs around the country and his performances can be heard on NPR’s Performance Today series. In 2001\, Mr. Gaisford recorded composer Michael Hersch’s Sonata No. 1 for Unaccompanied Cello and gave the NY premiere at the Tisch Center for the performing Arts to great acclaim. In 2004\, he recorded Hersch’s Sonata No. 2 for Unaccompanied Cello\, which was dedicated to Mr. Gaisford. The performance was recorded on he Vangaurd Classics label and selected by The Washington Post as one of the most important recordings of 2005 by chief critic Tim Page.  In 2015\, Last Autumn was released on Innova Records. \nNew releases also include the Bach Suites for Solo Cello and the Piatti Caprices for Solo Cello.  Daniel Gaisford grew up in Salt Lake City\, Utah where he studied with Richard Hoyt and Gayle Smith. Further studies took him to the University of Southern California where he studied with Gabor Rejto and Ronald Leonard. Gaisford continued his studies with Harvey Shapiro and Channing Robbins at The Juilliard School of Music in New York. While at The Juilliard School of Music\, Gaisford was principal cellist of the symphony orchestra and was the first prize winner of the Shostakovich Cello Competition which resulted in his Lincoln Center debut. \nMr. Gaisford’s recordings can be found at the iTunes store and on his website\, as well as many other online music vendors. \nGaisford has an online cello class of talented students and professionals and is currently in video and recording projects soon to be released. \n____________ \nVIOLINIST FILLIP POGADY \nPogády has performed in some of the most renowned concert venues in the world including Lincoln Center (New York)\, Rudolphinum (Prague)\, Konzerthaus (Vienna)\, Tel Aviv Opera House\, Lotte Hall (Seoul)\, and Seoul Arts Center. \nHe also makes TV appearances\, including guest starring on Louis CK’s “Louie”. \nAs a firm believer that music should be available to everyone\, Pogády joined Yehudi Menuhin’s “Live Music NOW!” Foundation\, which is dedicated to bringing music to orphanages\, nursing homes\, prisons and hospitals. Pogády has played over 30 recitals for “Live Music NOW!”. Pogády decided to take this concept to the next level and has been performing the Sonatas and Partitas by J.S. Bach in the New York City subway throughout his studies at the Manhattan School of Music until present. “Most of these people have never heard this kind of music before\, and yet it touches them on a basic human level\, because this music is just SO good\,” he says. \nPogády gave his solo debut with orchestra at age 11 at the Wiener Konzerthaus in Vienna after winning the 1st prize at the Tsusuki Violin Competition as the youngest contestant. \nHe participated three times at Austria’s nationwide music competition “Prima La Musica” and won the 1st prize each time. He was also honored with special prizes by the Austrian String Society and the Raiffeisen Bank for extraordinary results at this competition. \nPogády earned his Master’s Degree in Violin Performance under the tutelage of Maestro Pinchas Zukerman at the Manhattan School of Music\, where he was awarded a full scholarship. \nBorn in Bratislava (Slovakia)\, Pogády moved with his family to Austria as a child and began his violin studies at age 7. Just one year later he was admitted to the Bruckner Conservatory Pre-college in Linz. He gave his first recital at age 10. \nPogády resides in New York City. \n____________ \nOXANA MIKHAILOFF \nOxana Mikhailoff was hailed in a recent review by Jon Sobel as “a titan of the Romantic Piano Literature.” Of her playing\, Vladimir Feltsman said “…(Oxana Mikhailoff) is a mature and accomplished musician…Her playing has character\, imagination\, and is poetic. She has a strong personality and stage presence.” \nOxana has performed throughout Russia and Europe as a recitalist\, concert soloist and chamber musician. Her United States debut took place at Carnegie Hall in 1999. She later returned to Carnegie Hall to play an all-Chopin recital on the 150th anniversary of the composer’s death. \nOxana maintains an active teaching studio in Westchester County less than one-half hour from New York City. Along with Vassily Primakov\, Oxana is co-Artistic Director of the Sparkill Concert Series and the Midland Music Series in Bronxville\, NY. \n_____________ \nVASSILY PRIMAKOV \nIn recent years\, Vassily Primakov has been hailed as a pianist of world class importance. In 1999\, as a teen-aged prizewinner of the Cleveland International Piano Competition\, Primakov was praised by Donald Rosenberg of the Cleveland Plain Dealer: “How many pianists can make a line sing as the Moscow native did on this occasion? Every poignant phrase took ethereal wing. Elsewhere the music soared with all of the turbulence and poetic vibrancy it possesses. We will be hearing much from this remarkable musician.” \nVassily Primakov has released numerous recordings for Bridge Records that include works by Bach\, Mozart\, Beethoven\, Schubert\, Schumann\, Mendelssohn\, Brahms\, Chopin\, Dvorak\, Debussy\, Tchaikovsky\, Scriabin\, Rachmaninoff\, Philip Glass\, Arlene Sierra and Poul Ruders. \nIn 2011\, Mr. Primakov\, along with Natalia Lavrova established a new and vibrant record company\, L.P. Classics\, Inc. Their first release was Anton Arensky: Four Suites for Two Pianos. Most recently\, they released Primakov’s Live in Concert Album that includes works by Medtner\, Schumann\, Brahms’ Handel Variations and Ravel’s La Valse. www.lpclassics.net \nIn March 2012 Vassily Primakov became a Yamaha Artist. \nVassily Primakov is Artistic Director of Sparkill Concert Series since 2018 together with Oxana Mikhailoff. \n  \nBUY TICKETS
