This series of drawings was begun during an Artist Fellowship at the Creative Glass Center of America, Wheaton Arts Center in 2014. The most recent edition was created at Urban Glass in Brooklyn, NY in 2019.
In this body of work I work directly on paper, drawing with molten glass. As in all work with hot glass, the artist must work quickly- almost as if it were a dance. The resulting imagery reflects this sense of immediacy, creating gestural marks that reflect the quality of molten glass itself.
Joan Harmon received her Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts from the California College of Art where she began working in hot glass and worked directly with William Morris and Dale Chihuly at Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, Washington in its early years. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Drawing and Sculpture from Rutgers University. Harmon has received numerous grants and fellowships including an Honorarium from Burning Man in 2017. She is a sculptor and multimedia artist who works in a variety of media including cast cement, wood, fired clay, glass and wax and sometimes incorporating sound and light.
