Macrophotography by Laure Leber

“This is what I see when I’m relaxing, looking at the light dancing, looking deeply, going inward… finding the small things that inspire a stillness within. My current exploration into macro photography focuses on finding the extraordinary in the ordinary, of capturing moments that sparkle with light, life and hope.” –Laure A. Leber, 2022

Laure A. Leber is a documentary photographer whose work explores the visual sociology of subcultures, most notably capturing the lives of empowered women and social rituals that are often hidden and unavailable to non-participants.

Working in New York for the past 30 years, Leber’s raw photographs include an early look at the sport of women’s boxing; behind the scenes portraits of the seminal New York performance art band “The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black”; intimate glimpses at performers of the Neo-Burlesque movement; two generations of the Native American Sunrise Ceremony Na’ii’ee, a female coming of age ritual; and insights into the private world of Coney Island Sideshow’s ‘natural born’- performers empowered through overcoming their physical disabilities.

In response to the global pandemic, during a time of universal upheaval and transition, Laure takes a departure from her typical journalistic style and journeys into macro photography and a study of botany as a form of meditation and centering, culminating in this collection of photos. Peripheral Visions is not simply a celebration of beauty for beauty’s sake. It’s a reflection of the healing quality of color, and the evolving understanding of floral life as a window into the deeper interconnection of all living things.
