Radu Serban, Ph.D, Emeritus AIA
Radu Serban was born in 1943 in Bucharest, Romania, into a family of artists. His art and architectural activity spans three continents, capitalizing on both his European background and training coupled with more than five decades of creative experience. Formally educated as an architect, his complex personality and native gifts sharpened through arduous training and application allowing him to intertwine his carrier as an architect and apply intense artistic time resulting as an acclaimed painter. To fulfill his creative aspirations, together with family, in 1974 he chose to work for a while in Northern Africa-Algeria, then moved to Paris -France. In 1982 he settled in New York. He discovered the Hudson River Valley. Radu was fascinated by and chose it as a “locus”, settling there for his art exploration and family comfort.
Serban’s artistic talents concentrated upon the diversity of subjects found in the Valley and he started to nurture a real and deep admiration of its history, river communities and enchanting landscapes. The Rockefeller Park Preserve’s natural landmark offered him idyllic geographic resources.
A realist artist, Radu’s” “tableaux” are to seek new ways to evolve his favored “oils” medium in significant applications with palette knives to yield unique textures and beautiful life-like colors in new postimpressionistic images.
A demand for his images of New York City and countryside locations are in contrast with his sophisticated cityscapes of London, Paris and other European destinations thus appealing to collectors world-wide. Radu’s art was shown in Manhattan’s Soho and Roosevelt Island, in Washington D.C., London, Bucharest, Pleasantville, Piermont, Tappan, Nyack, Sparkill.
As an architect, before opening his own practice in partnership with two other New York architects, Radu Serban’s experience included projects at few renowned New York firms. He first worked with WBTL and DBA for colleges (Harvard, UMAB, Baruch). As a principal with ILeyvaA he was involved in prestigious New York landmark projects like Time Warner at Columbus Circle, Random House-Park Imperial on Broadway (JV w/SOM), Beekman Tower, Atlantic Yards (JV w/FOGehryA), Astor Place (JV w/GSA), luxury Residences (JV w/RAMSternA). As an associate partner-Director of International Projects for CKondylisP he worked for clients in Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Check Republic, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, and Philippines.
Radu Serban earned both his Architecture and Urban Planning Diploma and Ph.D. degrees from “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest, Romania and attended Courses in Italian Art and Architecture at The University for the Foreigners in Perugia, Italy. In the early ‘80s, as in a real workshop, Radu’s Paris experience enriched his artistic and architectural background.
He received the Design Award of the Masonry Institute of Maryland and awards from the Romanian Union of Architects, as well as painting awards from different art organizations. He was a member of the Advisory Board of the International Architectural Preservation Foundation “Pro Patrimonio”. Radu Serban has his studio in Tappan, close to Hudson River and not far from Manhattan, oscillating in-between these two environments which became indispensable to his life-style.
